1983 RX-7 GSL-SE

Just got this car. It's been sitting for two years. Got it started, but it still takes a lot of fuel pedal pumping to get it to catch unitl it warms up. Took it out for a drive, runs OK up to 4k rpm, flat after that. When driving at a constant speed (30 mph. 40 mph, 50 mph all the same) it does not run steady, feels like I'm letting off the gas pedal on/off, but I'm not. Back brakes were making noise by the end of test drive, so new pads will be project one this weekend. Any ideas on getting this engine back on its feet?

sounds llike maybe the secondaries are not opening up, take off your air cleaner and push on the secondary plates and see if they move, I had a car that they were stuck closed so I sprayed some carb cleaner down there and had to push on them to pop, but they worked fine ever since I did that. Also are you using the manual choke at all on start up? pull it all the way out, crank till it starts then push it in till you get down to 1500 rpm and it should pop back in automatically when you get to running temp. hope that helps!

Change your fuel filter, and otherwise tune up your car, then get back to us.

another biggie is to check that all your vaccume lines and emmissions are working properly, they will certainly kill the engines performance if something is not functioning properly or is not connected correctly.

get all the things you need for a full tuneup. install everything but the spark plugs and then pour a teaspoon of motor oil down each throttle bore and turn the engine by hand for 3 to 5 minutes.



fire it up and let it run up to normal temperature. when it's warm, check the secondaries to make sure they are working. if not then it's probably the opening mechanism that flipped back off the spring (can't tell you the right names for these parts) however, i'm sure someone else can.



if the engine is healthy, then the car should be fine with a tuneup and the secondaries working, if it's still sluggish, then we'll have to look elsewhere. let us know what happens.

Whohhoo! Finally had time to follow your advise. The secondaries were stuck, but we got them going! Had a great drive yesterday and let my 14 year old drive for the first time (In an empty parking lot!). This will be his car if he continues to be a good kid, er, young man.

Still cranks a long time at first start-up. After it is started, it fires right up after it is shut off or parked for awhile. The choke was jammed up but moves better the more I drive the car. It pulls out all the way and returns when the engine warms. BTW, the fuel filter looked good, but I changed it anyway. Also, can't seem to hit the correct timing and/or idle speed at the same time. Or is a little miss at idle normal?

Also, I saw a technical service bulletin that said to NOT run premium fuel, just use regular. Unfortunately, this was after filling up with premium. I'm down to a quarter tank, so if premium is an issue, I'll go fill back up with regular.
