Went to start my car this morning, nothing happened. I know the battery's not dead it was showing 14v on the tach/voltmeter. There was a whining sound when I cranked it, but the engine didn't turn over. Any suggestions?

sounds like starter motor solenoid possibly? where was this whining sound coming from? if it was right underneath you than your starter motor drive gear is not engaging.

I opened the hood and tried to listen to it. It sounded like it was coming from right infront of me. Since it looks like I'll be replacing it, is there a way to upgrade the starter. My car is an 80 and as far as know it's the original starter.

just find a shop that rebuilds alternators. mine cost like 60-80 bucks

alternator?!? you mean starter right?

alternaters are starters backwards. my friends truck did something like that once, theres a one way bearing in there, and his became 2 way

i tried starting the car a little earlier today and it started right up! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif can't explain that. i drove around for a bit, then came back home and turned it off. then i tried to start it again and it did the same thing to me it did this morning. is this a sign of anything?

How's the voltage wires on there? They can become dirty and corroded and sometimes will allow the starter to work intermittently and/or crank slow. Check the wires before you replace the starter.
