i just bought an 85 gs and i can get it to run but it wont rev over 3000 rpm

i checked the spark plugs and the leading plug in the first rotor is like new where as the other three are somewhat fouled

it has a spark but seems to not be igniting anything

can annyone help me

phinsup 04-27-2002 08:36 PM

Have you replaced the plugs?

CArotor 04-27-2002 09:15 PM

the guy i bought it from said he had replaced them and it did not help the problem (of course i know that means nothing)

i also failedto mention that the oil had what semmed like a excess amount of gas in it before i changed it

isamu 04-28-2002 01:02 AM

The oil in my 82 always smells pretty gassy compared to other vehicles I have had. I suggest you go with the easy stuff first; change the plugs and wires and go from there. I don't know if all 1st gens use a distributor, but if yours does buy a new cap and rotor as well.

ILUVMY88CABRIO 04-28-2002 01:44 AM

Also check for any vacume leaks.

CArotor 04-28-2002 10:04 PM

i have aleady bught a cap rotor and wires i justtook he uys word for it that the plugs were new cnsidering they cost more than your avrege spark plug) i guess ill hve to break out and buy them

also should i try an atf treatment before changing them

CArotor 05-01-2002 11:29 PM

put new spark plugs and a fule filter on it today and that did not help at all

phinsup 05-01-2002 11:32 PM

Is it getting fuel? Double check spark, then fuel.... you may have a carb issue.

treceb 05-02-2002 06:53 AM

ok, lets see. when you rev it, does it reach 3000rpm pretty quick, or does it get there slowly?? when the engine is running, does it shake like a mofo and feels like it wants too rip the supports off?? hows the timing??

You might want to do a compression test. Check the FAQ's there should be a how-to there.

and if you dont already have one get a haynes manual.

CArotor 05-02-2002 07:48 PM

it takes a while to get to 3k, does not shake.

i have already checked the timing and have a haynes, which does not seem to cover this type of problem

also, i think i forgot to mention that blows smoke

(unburned fule) untill it starts to warm up

treceb 05-03-2002 02:07 PM

check the compression, give it he atf treatment and recheck compression.

RotaryBoy88 05-06-2002 02:12 AM

I had a question here but i found it to be stupid, cause my lack of sleep. :sarcasm:

90N/A Rex 05-06-2002 01:30 PM

Maybe the cat is bad?? That happened to a van at work. Wouldn't go over 35mph and it had a bad cat. Just a thought.

CArotor 05-08-2002 11:11 PM

i just did an atf treatment and that didnt help either

the cat had already been replased with a strait pipe when i had bought it

it does have an exaust leak but i dont think that is the prob

CArotor 05-08-2002 11:16 PM

i have not done a compression test on it yet because my mayns says i cant use a regular compression tester on it and the speical tester is around $500 used

the nearest dealer is an 45 min. tow from where i live

is there anny way i can check it at home?

treceb 05-09-2002 06:16 AM

read here for a somewhat of a compression test. it wont give you accurate numbers but it will tell you if theres no compression.

CArotor 05-19-2002 11:45 PM

thanks everyone for your help i think it might be a carb prob.

what do you think

im waiting for my "7 fund" to build up so i can replace it. does annyone know of a good place to get a carb or rebuild kit fairly cheap

thanks and ill keep you posted

yayarx7 05-21-2002 11:11 AM

any autoparts store will have a rebuild kit for the nikki. If you want to spend the money, send your carb (or a spare) to Paul Yaw with $300. He will soup that thing up like you would not believe, and still maintain street driveability.

Good Luck,

Try looking in a junk-yard for a carb. talk to the guy at the junk-yard ask him if the car ran when it came in. It could have just been in an accident and the carb. would be OK thake it off. It's even pre ajusted!- Devon

RX7CMS 05-27-2002 05:43 PM

I know you said the cat was removed, but that was the problem with my 84 GS. It was running fine then one day I went to start it and it ran like crap. i looked under the car and the cat was glowing red. cleaned the cat out and no more problem

84rx7 07-03-2002 09:49 PM

would a clogged cat also cause it to backfire?

Suparslinc 07-07-2002 05:17 PM

I'm pretty sure its a carb issue. Does it also depend on how much throttle you give? If you floor it at 2k it will stumble early; if you slowly wind it out it might go all the way to 5 or 6k before it bogs.

Mine started doing this yesterday. I'm pretty sure your choke butterflies are not fully releasing and its making the car run way too rich. I'll work on mine tonite and get back here if I find out anything.

Suparslinc 07-07-2002 09:28 PM

well I was messing around with it for awhile tonite, it seems to rev better with the filter and box removed so I think its either the secondaries or something else, not sure yet.
