Hey everyone! I'm thinking about getting a 1979 rx7, but I have a couple questions before I buy.

1-What is the most powerful engine that I can put into it and how much hp can I get out of it? (This is not including turbo etc...) I'm aiming for at least 400+ hp when I finally add turbo and possibly NOS. I also want to get this car moving FAST!!!! Like, as they say in the Fast And The Furious, "a ten second car."

2-How much will the egine "thing" cost? Please don't give me something like "lots of $$$". I want an actual price so I can start saving.

Thanks a lot for your help. I appreciate any advice.

i dont want to sound rude or anything but i think you should invest the first 50 bucks in a great service manual and maybe some other reading material on cars. As for your question, alot of cash.. 1,000,000 ... there, i gave an actual figure :bigok:

13b1stgen 07-23-2002 06:45 AM

hey come on lets help the guy out.

well first off is the most power you can get from a N/A rotary is about 400hp but thats a pport 13b motor and isnt very reliable for street driving. now you got to ask yourself 2 questions. 1) is how much are you willing or able to spend 2) is how are you going to be using this car ( daily driver, street/strip car, road race, or full drag car)? when you answer those then maybe we could help a bit more

now second thing is please dont refer to "the slow and the frustrated" as a measurement of your desired speed it might make some of our members angry and confrontational https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png

Thanks for your quick reply(s). I've posted on other sites about different cars and they were slow to answer me.

First...I'm willing to spend a bit on this, but $1,000,000? I really don't think that's an accurate guestimate. Oh, BTW, I have been doing a lot of reading on cars on forums, but I can't ever seem to get the help I need. I was hoping that this forum was going to be different. No offense.

Second...I don't plan on using this as my commute car, but it may well be one. I just don't know that far in the future. See, I'm waiting around for a good deal to come up before I buy the car, then I'm gonna save up some cash and go buy all the other stuff. I need everything in three years though. (Personal reasons) However, the point is I want something that I can drive, take care of, but when challenged by the many local mustangs...I want them to suck my exhaust fumes. This car may also make a few long-distance trips. Mexico, Canada and maybe even the east coast. I know I'm gonna get guff for that, but I'll take it. No biggy.

Thanks.

phinsup 07-23-2002 10:58 PM

Well you don't need 400 HP to blow the doors off a Rustang... but that said a 79 is not your best bet for a 400 HP car, if you must have a first gen start with a GSL-SE 84 to 85, it already has the 13B as well as larger brakes and a few other features.

A 400HP car is never going to be practical to drive accross country, you'll probably spend more in gas than you will have spen in mods. 1,000,000 is rediculous, but the reality probably 20 grand to get the HP you want out of a 79 12A.

isamu 07-23-2002 11:41 PM

Well 400 hp is quite a bit, especially when you are starting out with a 79 RX-7 with 101 hp. To get that kind of horsepower out of a 12A you would have to Bridgeport the motor, or peripheral port it. You could also do a custom Turbo conversion, but I think 400 would be difficult to achieve. The Bridgeport would probably be unfun to drive on the street (poor gas mileage and bad idle). The peripheral port would require custom intakes and engine work. Basically you would probably be better off going with a complete engine swap in my opinion. You swap in a 13Bt with drivetrain and then mod that. You could reach your 400 hp mark much easier than with the 12A. I am not saying it would be cheap however! It would be a project and a half, but not impossible.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck.

13b1stgen 07-24-2002 05:55 AM

well since im in the process of building a 400+hp 12a bridge port i can tell you that its gonna be alot cheaper than swapping in a 13bt motor. now it will be streetable but i wouldnt drive it long distance check my post for the 12a turbo kits.

now like phinsup said i wouldnt do a 79' but an 84-85 gsl would be nice to start with and they're a bit cheaper than a gsl-se. i guess it all depends on what you wanna do and whether you like FI or carbed motors

clueless 07-25-2002 01:46 AM

Ok, this helps a lot! And that's not being sarcastic. Thanks.

I'll do some more searching around and reading up on some stuff then I'll get back if (when) I have more questions.

clueless 07-26-2002 12:36 AM

Hey. Can I put a 20b three rotary engine in an '84-'85 gsl-se?

13b1stgen 07-26-2002 05:21 AM

yeah but the engine is worth more than the car

treceb 07-26-2002 06:37 AM

you can read up on hp numbers here: rotaryracing.com

and i guess take it from there

clueless 07-26-2002 11:26 PM

ok, I know I'm talking about an rx-7 car, but is it possible to put that engine (20b...) into a '91 MX-5 LX?

And, thanks for all the advice

Shane.Trammell 07-26-2002 11:28 PM

yeah dac put the 13b in a sidekick. so i think you could prob put anything in anything

Wooffinn 07-27-2002 06:34 AM

Hey Clueless, hey boys ,back again after a slight computer problem and a few other cash flow probs!! In my neck of the woods there's a couple of gen ones with 20B's fitted. I'm not sure how the chassiswould take it as a friend of mine who curcuit races a '79 with a 13B turbo bridgeport, tends to have to weld floors etc after a couple of meetings just from the twisting affect!! :P It has about 290 hp at the rear wheels and I can tell as insanely quick! As Isamu said not impossible but from fixing/driving high hp rotors you'll have to adress other systems in the car as well. As for the MX-5, a couple of guys over here do 13b conversions but I haven't heard of 20b swap. It may be a bit too long for the engine bay. But you never know....

clueless 07-27-2002 03:10 PM

13b1stgen, what do you mean the engine is worth more than the car? Just wonderin'.

Can someone give a site to go to for a list of mods that can be done to a 13b engine and also a 20b engine. Thanks.

SoRRoW 07-28-2002 07:12 AM

You wont see many 79 RX7s for 4-5k...a 20 b will run you about that much..
