Chris, thanks for the compliment bro. I'm going to try and do this car up right. Something that I can hand down to my kid. If I ever have one. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif
74rx4, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! I have been searching everywhere for those files!!!!!!!!!! I appreciate it more than you know! I can now use the info from that in the process of restoring my PA. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif I'm going to try and get lucky tracking Mr. Dooley down through the old address and phone number for the company as well. This has really made my day!!!!!!!! Thanks again. Zach |

You have a great piece of RX-7 history. Congratulations. There are 7 zip files on my site. Change the number in the url to 1-7 to download the others. These articles are from Rotary Rocket. This was the magazine of the RX-7 Club of America. I think you'll be most interested in this one. http://intertron.com/ron/images/rra5.zip Ron Slabach Naples, FL 2) 74 RX-4 76 Cosmo (RX-5) 84 GSLSE http://intertron.com/ron/ thanks for the info |

There will be more updates coming just after the new year. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif I had to take a week or so away from working on the car, but I've had some more time now. I'll have the update with pictures up by Tuesday at the latest.
Happy New Year to everyone. Zach |

Ok, so I got the rest of the interior out of the car. And I can say one thing for sure. Al Dooley made sure that the car would be stiff enough after the top was removed!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif

That'll do it alright! What thickness is that plate?
|
I didn't measure it, but I would say about 1/4" just from "eyeballing it."

That is a sweet car. IS that a draw through turbo set up? I'm pretty sure its not a blow through cuse theres no hat . What size turbo is that? Is the manifold cast iron? what size- model holley is that? Most important how mutch hp dose it make. If you cant tell I way intrested in the turbo set-up tell me every thing you can.
|
Yes, it is a draw through setup. It's an old Arkay turbo kit. I'm hoping to be able to get the carb and turbo out of the car this weekend. If so then I'll list up what I can see as well as pics for everyone to look at. I don't have any specs on the turbo as of yet but I will after it gets rebuilt. The Holley is a 4brl. Once again, I don't know what the specs on the carb are. The carb rebuild is being done by Robert at Rotaryshack. The turbo is also going down to Rotaryshack. So after they get rebuilt then I'll be able to let you know the specs on them. And the hp numbers will be listed after the motor is built and broken in. That's going to be quite a while from now though. But keep checking in on the thread as I usually update it with more progress every week.

UPDATE TIME!!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif
Ok, so I went to work under the hood this afternoon. I only worked on it for a couple of hours but I got a few things done. I'm on hold now until I have the time to get under the car to continue what I've started. Start with the engine compartment all covered with dirt: https://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i...eek%204/14.jpg Attachment 20055 Attachment 20056 And now after I simply hosed it off. No actual cleaning was done, just a fresh water rinse: Attachment 20057 Attachment 20058 |

Here are some pics of the turbo. While the kit is from Arkay, the turbo is a Rajay. I'm not familiar with it, but Robert from Rotary Shack was telling me about them. This thing has ZERO shaft play! Granted it only has 17K miles on it but still, I was happy. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif :
https://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i...ek%204/194.jpg Attachment 20042 Attachment 20043 And this turbo is good sized. It's EASILY bigger than the stock FC turbo. I'll be very interested to see exactly what the specs are on it after I send it off to get "freshened up." And the inside of the intake tract is so perfectly clean and shiny. It's funny how great of a job fuel does at keeping things clean. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif That's it until I can get under the car. Next up will be pulling the exhaust, turbo, exhaust mani, and getting ready to pull the motor itself. Then I'll be on hold until I save up money to buy parts to start the rebuilding process. Hopefully I can save up that money in a timely fashion. We'll just have to wait and see though. As always, thanks for checking in and keeping up with the restoration of my baby. Zach |
Wow, it came up well, looks like you might have less work to do that the first few dirty pictures suggested https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif
|
Yeah, I was really surprised at how much better everything looked after simply spraying it down with the hose. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif As long as I don't end up working next weekend then I'll have the exhaust, turbo, and exhaust mani off. Then I'll finish getting the motor ready to pull out.
Zach |
This is part of a post from Robert of Rotaryshack on the evil forum:
"that turbo you have there is capable of making 400 hp all day long.. its got a 60mm compressor wheel while the turbine wheel is slightly bigger than a p trim, rayjay turbos were one of the top mfgs. back in the day.." I know it's not a full list of specs for that turbo, but at least it's a little info for those of you who were curious about it. Zach |
that sounds grazy, i reckon that would have about 250hp mybe more. and thats in a first gen back in the day, would have being f@@king fast back then.
|
interesting find on this car. Far from mint, though. Good luck with it.
|
Yeah, it's WAY off from mint but I'll fix that problem. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif I can't wait for this weekend so I can fully bare block the motor and get ready to pull it for rebuild. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif
Zach |
i think if it was mine, i would have cleaned the motor and turbo, and just run it, its prolly fine.... although if you're doing a real resto, its gotta come apart anyways....
|
Ahh, you dont want that old crap. Send me your address and i'll send you the N/A carb, intake, and exhaust setup in trade for that scrap metal you have there. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif
|
RXheaven, yeah go ahead and send me your address. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif
J9fd3s, I hear ya. If I wasn't doing a full out resto then I would've just tried to get it running again. But since everything else is getting torn apart I might as well rebuild everything under the hood too. Zach |
Check out snow performance stage II water/meth injection. This will really help cool the intake charge. I would plumb it in after the turbo. I use it with my Camden and it make quite a difference on intake temps.
|
I would like to run either a Snow Performance or Devil's Own AI kit, but that would be a HUGE change from stock and that's not what I want to do. If this were just a normal FB then I would. In fact, depending on how much I like this draw through setup I might have to pick up a normal GSL and go all out with it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif
And sorry that I haven't updated the thread in so long. Work has been a bit rough lately. We have a big inspection going on right now so in prep for that we've been working at least 12 hour shifts with either one or no days off for the past couple of weeks. But things will be back to normal starting this weekend so expect to see some updates with pics by the end of the weekend. Zach |
that's awesome man, nice fun it looks like a blast!
|
Any new updates?
|
Not as of yet. But there will be more soon. I have just been scavenging parts I needed as well as picking up an '88 vert for my wife's new DD. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif The exhaust, turbo and exhaust mani will be the next pieces to come off.
|
Any new pic of your project ? I found the same turbo set up and I was trying to figure out how to install it.
