First let me say hello to every one....I am the new kid here..



I just got a 79 RX7 today. I have seen these cars before but never seen the engine in one till this thing showed up in my drive way.



I got this car because I wanted something different... I also saved its life



A guy that lives up the road from me had this car outside his garage for a while

I found out yesturday that it was going to the CRUSHER!!!!! Long story short I talked him into giving the car to me in trade for a 91 buick that I had and it needed work.



The car runs.. drives and everything seems to work okay.



I just want to know if this ROTARY engine is reliable. and can these cars be a daily driver.



Also Is it worth anything??



It could use a paint job.. body is is in good shape ... interior is okay but the dash is craked.



Any info would be much appreciated

they can be reliable, like any other car, if taken care of properly. that means oil changes, plugs, regular maintinance. running low octane is the best for this car because there's no turbo. Don't ream it all the time and it will be reliable as long as you keep up on it.

oh yes and welcome. I'm a noob here too, i usually inhabit various other rotary forums, rx7club is a great forum in addition to this one.

I've had mine for four years now and i swear i will never give her up!! If you behave with the motor, and do ALL the maintainence the car will be great. If you are worried about it then have a shop put new apex seals and side seals in it and then baby it for a while. you should be fine. Welcome!!

How much does this cost for apex seals and stuff??? I know Nothing about these engines... I can work on a piston engine but never been faced with this.. Im up for the challange though

I have see everything in price range for apex seals, i suggest though that you talk with a REAL rotary engine biulder i.e. someone like Rob Golden at Pineapple Racing and follow his advice. Maybe go out find another first gen tear out the motor(like seven hundred to a tousand $), buy a chilton/haynes book, and have at it. You'll learn alot AND you get to keep driving your car.. Wish I had followed this advice when I did my project( the rebirth of my 78)

these cars are super old now, but STILL they are really reliable. ive got a 79 right now too, and it looks and runs like new, engine is the factory motor

they have a bad rep bcos people cane the living crap out them and wonder why the engines blow after 60k. If you treat it like a normal car and just give it a little stick when you need to, it will stay good for ages.

The earlier models are quite reliable. I currently have 190,000 mile on mine and there are some people who have over 200k on their motors. The turbos (86-95) are where people have modified their motors without understanding how to make them live and having to replace after 70k.
