What are the weights of the 1st gen chassis?

Assuming everything non-essantial is removed, which year/model chassis will be the lightest?

j9fd3s 03-28-2006 09:29 AM

81-85. 79-80 adds weight with the bumpers and the 5mph bracing.

off the showroom floor a 79-80 gs with ac and stuff is like 2450lbs

an 81-85 gs is like 2350lbs

a gsl-se is 2550ish

z-beater 03-28-2006 10:43 AM

^^I agree

I have seen 79-80's that are just under 2000. I think that they had tons of stuff done though. Ie fiberglass hood fenders etc.

I'm looking at doing that stuff, once i have the time (the fiberglas hood & fenders, that is). Anyone have any ideas or anything on how to make the molds?

Would a carbon fiber hood be lighter than fiberglas, or no?

j9fd3s 03-28-2006 11:50 AM

the 79 imsa cars were 2020lbs. i think in 80 they had to run at 2250, because they were too fast. then 2450, then 2250 with a bridgy....

is that why the speedo in my '80 only goes up to 80? i'm working on doing other stuff, too, including converting to propane. I wonder if i'll be the only owner of a 1st gen RX-7 in the US that's converted one to Propane. its turning out to be a pain in the ass, but i'm up to the challenge.

j9fd3s 03-28-2006 12:59 PM

the 85mph speedo was legislated by the us govt, i guess its to keep you from speeding or something? or somehow having a 120mph speedo was unsafe https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png

Yeah, we are talking everything though. I mean these cars would have sucked to drive on the street. Lightweight uncomfortable seats, no interior, no door panels...nothing...I will live with my extra few hundred pound for the added "luxury".

On a side note I think that it is so funny when people take out their passanger's seat so that they can save a few pounds. Come on now...

What are you building?

One320B 03-28-2006 04:36 PM

My 1984 GS is gunning at 2300lbs right now w/ just the interior removed and stripped down tar, etc. Has the dash and one stock seat right now....

Next I'm cutting the doors, putting an fg bumper and a cf hood on... I'm hoping that'll put it right around 2250 or so...

with you in it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

my stock 83 limited edition, stock with a full tank of gas was 2330lbs....

Rx7aholic 03-28-2006 07:43 PM

Yeah 78-79 is the only 1st gen u will ever find that was made light because they had no power mirror/window, only power hatch & a.c.

Just tossing around the idea of a 1st gen with some serious power...

Lightweight is the way to go...

z-beater 03-28-2006 10:29 PM

I totally agree. When you say serious power what do you mean. 300-400? When you are sub 2000 and have tons of power that would be scary. Don't forget that if you are putting down some power you are also going to want a rear-end that will hold it. That will add another 50-100lbs unless you spend the 2k on the guru one.

At 400rwhp and 2000lbs would be insane...

Or you could just build a v8...but we won't go there while in nopistons.com... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

j9fd3s 03-29-2006 10:28 AM

i'm doing a little research, the RB bonneville car had 530hp@15psi....

Yes, but it'll cost a lot more.

i figured i'd check. i'd rather stick with fiberglas right now, because i'd be able to make it for a lot cheaper than it would be to buy a cf hood.

mike_rudy 03-30-2006 04:32 PM

My rx7 has a 302 in it, 9 inch ford rear end, 14 point roll cage, heavy c6 tranny, and it weights just under 1900lbs without driver. It is completely stripped, we cut out all of the inside of the doors which took out alot of weight. We have done no fibre glass work yet, and the back 3 windows are still glass.

z-beater 03-30-2006 06:19 PM

You car is by FAR the lightest that I have heard of. With that cage etc gone I am sure that it would be extrememy light...

Which year?

You're on the money there. SA bumpers don't weigh that much, the brackets are the heavy part.

If you could find one a jap-spec SA22C would be the lightest to start with. You will save 10-11 kg's with a C/F hood https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

z-beater 04-06-2006 04:07 PM

A local guys has your hood, it is insanely light. Do you have any additional bracing on the hood though?

1Revvin7 04-30-2006 02:17 AM

Well things are crackin at the shop so looks like I might be able to afford the beast!
