I learned about Fram about 6 years ago on my 98 F150. The anti drain back valves are crap. The engine would knock every time I'd start the thing

up. I changed the oil again with another filter, and no more startup knock. From that point on, I vowed to never buy another Fram..,,,,BB

Well... I'm sold on the K&N filter for sure now!!

From Mr. Allen on the Bob the oil guy list.:

Here are the latest K&N Filter Specs for a K&N NP-6001 (Ford Powerstroke Filter):

10 um- 53.1 %

20 um- 95.4 %

30 um- 99.9 %

Capacity- 55.4 grams

Hydrostatic Burst- 558 psi

Element Collapse- 175 psid

Flow Rate- 20 GPM (J-806)

Note the rating at 30 microns. And not bad at 20 microns either. The advantage for racers is the burst rating and high flow rates. For dirt holding and finer filtration Amsoil filters are better, But, I don't know what the burst on them is. If you like to see that tach needle in the red, then K&N is a good bet. For the daily beater with long runs between filters, then the Amsoil is a good bet.

I called K&N to get some specs today but there closed...

The books say that 79-91 mazda rx-7 used a K&N HP-1004 and the 93-95 uses a HP-1008.

RacingBeat says that all mazda RX-7's 79-95 use the same filter.. for the past few years I have used the OEM mazda filter because of Hydrostatic Burst rating and the bypass valve takes a lot more pressure before it bypasses...

The K&N HP-1008 is the same size as the OEM mazda filter, But the HP-1004 is a bit bigger....

This is kind of a stupid question, But are there advantages to running the larger filter..????

I took a look inside both filters and they have a different looking bypass mechanism also....

Oh well, I'm going to give K&N Engineering another call on monday and see if I can get some specs on rotary specific oil filters...

Thanks again for the info Mr. hanover...

at this point in time mazda lists the same filter for all the rx7's, but the filters have been updated 5-6 times, and in that time, they have gone from a big tall can to a smaller one (with an INCREASE in filter). so k&n might have looked up some old numbers or something

in theory a bigger filter is better, holds a little more oil, has more filter etc etc

baldeagle432 06-25-2009 08:41 PM

lol thats gay man

fc3s4utnv 06-25-2009 10:05 PM

How is that gay? Because you dont have the first clue what they are talking about maybe?

To me an oil filter is the most important thing I do to my engine. I spend the 14 something for the mobile 1 and k&n filters for a reason..... they are best!
