I got my 84 running and quieted down (pulled off cat back and installed a turbo muffler in it's place). Now it doesn't want to stay running. As long as the choke is engaged, it will run in neutral, but as soon as I try to put it in gear, it wants to stall out. Also, as soon as the choke kicks out, I have to stay on the gas to keep it running. Any ideas?

could be a vacuum leak, how does it run if you do get it going?

RotaryRookie 04-21-2002 06:05 PM

It seems to run fine as long as the rpm's stay up. I haven't taken it out of the yard, (afraid it will stall and get me stuck) so it hasn't even gotten out of 1st gear. What should idle be on these motors? It's real choppy under about 1500. I think all the vacuum lines are hooked up, but I'll recheck them all.

Thanks

Jake

idle is supposed to be at 750rpm but all mine are set at about a grand or so.

:( ...and I thought I was the only one with this problem.

schmoker 05-25-2002 05:59 AM

I have had the same problem. I bought my 85 RX7 from a junk yard (U-Pull-it) and it had it's cat. pulled off and it could only run correctly with a zip-tie holding the choke down. I still haven't found the problem. My only advice is to put the cat. back on. It's easer than playing with it untill it works. I think it is a backpressure issue. -Devon

I Tcould be that you have a egr valve in your vacum system blown i have had these problem in the past pull the vaccum hose off the bottom of the air cleaner an stick a bolt or something in it an see if it smothes out

I'm currently running with no cat as long as you have a presilencer the back pressure is fine Rotary Performance in Garland Texas makes a great pipe with presilencer on it for $75 an you get the add performance of not having a cat without the noise I run this with a stock muffler an it's a nice low growl sounds real good an not so loud yuo can't hear your passengers or the radio..

Good luck

the cat has no bearing on the operation of the carb and choke. removing it only spews hydrocarbons in the air.

there is a fresh air supply for the cat coming out of the intake manifold. if you do not block this up (everyone sells a blockoff plate) you will have a vacuum leak. Resulting in the problems you describe.

that is not the EGR valve, it is the shutter valve. it leans out the mixture on decelleration to prevent backfiring.

the Rotary engine need little to no backpressure. If you have a set of commercial headers or a stock manifold, you have enough backpressure.

the presilecer is a GREAT idea as it keeps the lawnmower on crack sound to a minimum. Although the stock muffler leaves a lot to be desired in terms of flow.

Nothing beats a complete exhaust from RB or Mindtrain. Quaility, power, far from loud, and will last you forever.

I had purchased my Rex from a fella who told me that the cat had been replaced. (The one I purchased it from didn't have it long and didn't drive it.) If the line running from the cat to the intake manifold was disconnected OR there was no blockoff plate this, am I to assume this is the cause of my problem?

I had something similar to mine happen...after school one day I went to start her up with the choke as usual...she would run until I killed the choke and the engine was warm...then nothing...spudder and my engine would die

We had to take her to a local mechanic...something to do with a valve in the idle circuit...it would have cost too much to fix so he just put a piece of hose to bridge the gap

I can tell you one thing tho...if you have the cash find someone to put a carb kit on your car...tune it...the whole works...anything to get rid of those bloody valves and switches the japs put on our carbs

just be sure it includes a fuel pump if you end up doing that someday...from what I hear the stock pump is a POS

SoRRoW 06-18-2002 08:19 AM

Do Like I did ...

Stripp all the emissions off..vacums....air pump etc..

Throw away your intake and carb...

Get a Racing Beat intake and Holley 600 mechanical secondary..double pumper..

Get a header while your at it ..

Go get a Holley Blue fuel pump with regulator ..cause stock pumps push like 4 psi of fuel...

The throttle cable braket I made out of a alternator braket.

man to much to list.....on what to do ...but its alot better than the stock set up..

unless you car about gas milage or emissoins

thanks I will have to try that.

I also have a question. What turbo Muff. should I use for my 85 GL? Mine got all bent up. I got rear ended by a bmw.

RotaryRookie,

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. I had a similar problem when I removed my carb. My cat is removed, and I am running with a straight pipe w/out a presilencer. A presilencer will reduce your exhaust noise (mine's a little too loud for my liking). If your cat is removed check to see if you have a vacuum leak from the back passenger side of your carb. There should be a small blocking plate there where a metal tube would have been feeding air into the cat. This might be where your vacuum leak is. Mazdatrix, or RacingBeat sell various block-off plates for those of us who remove the emissions stuff from our X's.
