I am new today to the board, so I know no one will recognize me. Anyways, I've been working hard on getting this car to run, but can't seem to get it started. I've checked virtually everything but the compression. When I try to start the car, the spark plugs get fouled by the fuel. I know the ignition/injection(replaced a stuck closed injector)/computer/airflow meter etc.. are all within specs for voltage and resistance. I have tried to fire the car w/the fuell rail off so I could see the injectors misting, and they do so properly. I think the distributor is set correctly( rotor is right at leading 1 at top dead center). Therefore, I am drawing a loss as to what may be the problem. I bought the car not running, it has a 136k and everything electronic worked. Can someone explain the start assist system my car is equipped with? Also, are there any signs when trying to start the motor that foretell major damage? Lastly, can anyone tell me how to check the compression? I suspect I have flooded the motor trying to start it, and therefore don't have much compression. Tips, Ideas, Inquiries....?

Thanks

Evita

Take out your leading spark plug from the front rotor housing and crank the engine. Listen for three puffs of compression. Do the same for the rear. If you hear three on each, I would assume that the compression is ok. You can also hook up a pistion compression tester on the leading of the front rotor housing and hold the release pin down and crank the engine to see where the needle bounces to. Do this for the front and the rear rotor housings. Thats al I can think of as to checking the compression. You can try and do a search for the ATF trick, and see what you come up with. That may help you.

Ok, heres a link to a thread telling you how to do the ATF trick https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png.

Have you checked for spark???

Are you referring to the zub zero start assist?

phinsup 09-11-2002 09:00 AM

If you have spark do you have compression?

Just asking, but are you using NGK spark plugs? If so just try to pull start. See what happens. It's an idea. Good luck

Try the basice first. You're checking spark and fuel, that's good. Check for a clogged fuel filter, air filter, etc. An engine needs air to ignite the fuel, after all.

Also, and I don't mean this in any condescending manner, but a member of RX7club posted similar starting problems, then was embarassed to post later that in fact he was out of gas.

Just go through a checklist

Fuel supply, from tank, through filter, and out injectors?

Air supply through unrestricted intake?

Spark to make the mix of the two go kaboom?

Compression to assist the spark?

No vacuum leaks?

Is the EGI module functioning?

etc. etc.
