It's been a long while since I have posted, but i have lost all faith in my mechanic. I have replaced the clutch, water pump, radiator, carb, starter, plugs, belt, fuel filter, engine...this is all in my 84 12a. The carb was supposed to be rebuilt by "paul yaw"...which it has been rebuilt yet again by the mechanic...he said the gaskets were shot from setting for quite a few years. Anyway...i have a problem with idle...until the car is warm it sounds like one rotor doesn't run very good...kind of a chug chug chug thing. I have had it in the shop 3 or 4 times for this problem and its still not fixed...cost me 290 last time and i got nothing. All i know is the front chamber was flooding with too much gas to run. I also have this loud bang when i turn the car off...i'm guessing its exhaust escaping my factory rear pipe...its straight all the way to that. Usually takes 5 to 10 seconds to escape...but it sounds like a 12 guage. I also have a problem with my idle...its running around 1400...i told the mechanic this and he said it was fixed...but its not. I'm about to the point now where i'm just going to part the stupid piece out. It's just too much trouble and stress...plus the problems never end.

Anyone have any ideas?

Well its good to hear from ya, but it seems like everytime you post its about a problem https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png , which sucks because you should be enjoying your car! If I were you I would not go back to that mechanic. Sounds like he is screwing you or just doesn't know what he is doing, either way he sucks. Does the car run alright when it is warm? I believe the 12A's are pretty cold blooded. I know mine doesn't like temps below 45 degrees. It takes about 15 minutes to warm up and will backfire like a bitch. Once its warm its great. Do you still have the stock Mikuni? If I remember right you do and it has the larger or "gross" jets installed to flow more fuel? It sounds to me like your carb needs to be tuned. Sounds like you are running way rich and the 1500 idle is too high. I would by a manual and try messing with it yourself or you could take it to a rotary shop if there is one near you. I would definitely not take it back to that guy. Your car sounds like a nice 1st gen and you have invested lots of time and money into it. So don't start parting it out just yet. If you wanted I am sure someone on the forum would come out and help you if it wasn't too far. Good luck!

where do you want to start first?

First the cold startup. Check to see if the choke isn't being opened by the choke

pull off. That would cause it to sound lumpy (mine does) when the choke is

fully applied.

Next the high idle. On mine I found the cruise control accelerator cable to have

pulled out of it's crimped end, holding the throttle open.

Next the bang. Once you reduce the idle to a more tolerable level, that bang

should go away completely. It is caused by the carb allowing fuel to be sucked

into the motor as it winds down after you shut off the ignition. When it hits a

hot spot in your exhaust...BANG! it also helps foul out your plugs.

BTW, does your carb have 1 idle mix screw or 2?
