My 84 is absolutely stock except for the steering wheel, and I'm in the process of
1) trying to put in a nice stereo 2) trying to fix the horn, (because when the previous owner :squint: put in the sports steering wheel, they didn't hook the horn up.) 3) replacing most of the original switches(which are burned out) The switches bit is the easy part, the others I'm having trouble with. Does anyone know the exact location of the horn relay? I've got 2 maintenance manuals, one is Haynes and is really useless and the other is a mitchell from http://www.iluvmyrx7.com and tells me nothing at all. :squint: I'm in the process of downloading the original wiring diagram to print. From the online version my relay is apparently in the dash somewhere, but after spending a few hours upside down, I'm yet to find it (I'm probably not looking hard enough but some guidance would be much appreciated) https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png With the stereo, I'm in the process of having to practically remove my entire dash to pull out the old stereo, and additionally the radio is 3 piece, making my life even more difficult, cos I'm going to be left with gaping holes from the stock stereo balance thingy and graphic equaliser. (Now I'm pissing myself off cos I sound like a whinging bitch) Do I have to cut the dash to fit my new stereo? Can anyone recommend anything for replacing the balance and graphic equalizer holes after I take them out? and where the f**k is my horn relay? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif Please help... :stickpoke: haha |
i hear my horn relay back there but i have no idea where it is, i'll be looking soon though
the radio is easy to take out, you take off the silver console thing and then there are 4 screws holding it in mike |
you can get surrounds from www.rotorhead.ca that will trim the area where the rest of the stereo used to be and let you mount some gauges there.
|
They look pretty good, but my air vent section at the top of the centre console is not a circle one, its a horizontal slide one. Damn! I was going for the brushed steel look interior as well. :squint:
|
I can't find the lower screws in my 83's center trim panel around the shifter and sterio.Does anyone know where they are?I want to get both panels painted.
|
if you take off the shifter plate thing its right there. i know for sure on the 84+, havent torn an older one apart in a long time

Yeah, I had a similar problem that was fixed with 2 flat-head screwdrivers and a bit of careful prying. There are 2 plastic tabs holding the shifter plate to the centre console at the bottom. Just try and pop it out. You'll see the screws right underneath. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Thanks you guys. :bigthumg: https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683894.gif

i was talking to a guy yesterday & he was telling me not to use the haynes or chiltons due to the fact that they are not in depth. you can order the one that the mazda techs use at www.hemmingmotornews.com

I got the official Mazda wiring diagram from the 84 and it said that the horn relay was under the dash. After a few days of being upside lookin in my dash and not finding it, I was getting really pissed off. In the end I tried to trace the wire from the horn and found the relay under teh hood/bonnet hidden behind the battery at the very front of the car. So much for official wiring diagrams. :squint:

http://www.lafayetteradio.com/Accessories/...its/99-7501.htm this is the kit that I have on my 84 rx7 it looks ok and 15 - 20 bucks hay what the heck.
|
In the end, I made a harness myself out of the factory stereo mounts, and temporarily filled in the graphical equailzer hole with a piece of perspex in which I've mounted my tweeters from my speakers. Good enough for now, I'm waiting to find out from www.rotorhead.ca if they can make a dash kit for me and send it to Australia where I live. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

what state you in? |
I'm in Perth, Western Australia. They said they don't have the kit for the guages I have in Silver, and didn't say anything about the dash, so I might have to get back to them again.

I replaced my horn relay and the horn worked perfectly fine, then I went for a drive and found that whenever I turned a corner, the horn made a noise. I was like WTF!!, but when I investigated behind the steering wheel, I found that the rubber surround on the boss kit for the sports s/wheel had split, so the copper pin that moves in the circular track for the horn was getting earthed at certain points where the rubber had split. I tried auto silicone to replace the bits of rubber, and that worked, but in the end, I figured better safe than sorry and bought a new boss kit.
PS If none of this makes any sense, I'm writing a how-to and problem solving on my web site. soon... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif |
