Problems.

Long story short, I put spark plugs in and everything went to hell. But its not the spark plugs. I've had both out they're not cracked. I even put the old ones back in. My engine is making a violent pinging noise when I rev it from idle. I think this was there before, but I never had the hood up, so it wasn't nearly as loud. Once I'm up beyond 4, its gone and its only when you hammer it. It' s soo loud. Almost like screeching rubber. Also, power isn't where it should be. I've checked everything in the ignition, and had a timing light on the thing.

Turns out my leading timing shows the marks down by my air conditioner. The trailing ones are also off, but still quite close to the timing rod thingy and can be adjusted almost back in.

Could somone PLZ help. Also the basics of timing these cars would be welcome, since this is the first time I've done it... Is red trailing? and why does the hood say L --> 0*

T --> 10* ATDC

when it seems like most run 24* L ATDC

16* T ATDC

I've got an MSD setup with 2 Blaster II coils. The car has a Holley, headers and a RB intake, so It doesn't idle below 1000.

thnx in advance for any help!

you sure you have the plug wires in the right places? if you get the trailings backwards, it makes bad noises

I'll go try that, but I've run it on only the trailing, and despite no power, the noise is gone...

checked that, wasn't it... thnx though.

Story thus far.

At first I had the magnetic pickup reversed fromwhen what I had to link it to the MSD broke. (embarassing, I know) but the problem was still there, jsut not nearly as bad. I rechecked my timing and it was still a little off. So I reset it until the car is running great, but then I go to put the vacuum lines back on the dizzy and the pinging is back. wtf? As soon as I take the vacuum advance off, the pinging is gone. I've heard guys runnning without the advance, but the car still doesn't feel as responsive as I think it should without it. I'll try a 1/4 run tomorrow, but I dunno. Adjusting the timing with the vacuum advance on still doesn't get rid of the ping. Do the advance pots ever crap out? This happened to anyone ?>

I wouldnt recommend doing a "1/4 run" untill you get your timing issues worked out. It could be your disty needs a rebuild, hit the bone yard and see if you can find one on the cheap.

I have seen a couple of vacuum canister diafragms that were crispie. You touch the rubber and it just flaked apart. Just hook up a vacuum line to the canister and apply vacuum to see if it holds. If it does not replace it.

If its only pinging when you hook up the vac advance lines, then I would have to say that your timing is still too far advanced. Just rotate the dizzy a little bit counter clockwise and try it again.

Counterclockwise = retard Clockwise = advance
