i have an 1984 GSL SE and we just finished putting in a neww motor. don't know what the problem is but we aren't getting any spark to the the plugs, hoping for any suggestions. thanks

Have you traced it back yet?

Where does it start/stop?

Need ignition components list new and used and a little history to be of any help.

It could be a number of things causing you to not get spark. Is the motor timed correctly? Check for grounds; make sure all the ignition components have good solid grounds. Then, I dunno... electronics aren't my forte. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png



Hope you can figure it out. What does the Haynes Manual say?

Mark-look in the back of the manual for the stuff concerning the GSL-SE. the entire manual except for the last section deals specifically with older RX-7's, before 1982, so look in the back!

Test your plugs for spark:

Lay your plugs, one at a time, on or close to something grounded in the engine compartment with the sparkplug wire plugged to the dist. crank but dont start the engine. if no spark

Test your plugwires:

pull the wires one at a time and, with a screwdriver plugged into the sparkpug side of the wire, lay it on or close to something grounded and crank but dont start the engine. If good spark, replace plugs. If no spark

Test coils:

warm the engine up to normal operating temp and unhook the coils(try to keep up with them, but its not impairative)Use an ohmmeter to test the coils for resistence. The primary resistence is 1.35 +/- 10% for both coils and while your there check the resistence to the external resistors. they should be 1.4 +/- 10% for both. If the coils are good, check wire boots for snugness, replace if needed or replace plugwires. if plugwires are good and your getting good spark at the coils, move on to the igniters. If the coils are no good replace them.

Test the igniters:

remove the igniters and with a switchable test light check the igniters one at a time. when you turn the switch on and off the light should come. if no light replace the igniters.

If the igniters and all the others components are good then your distributor is probably shot. They are rebuildable but its easier to buy one and alot faster and probably, by the time you actually finish, cheaper.

If you suspect your distributor try to find a used one cheap to test it before spending the money.

nod1stgen-we cant warm the car to operating temperature, seeing as we aren't getting any spark, therefore the engine wont start! I think while I was gone, Mark already checked for spark at the wires and stuff. I think he's buying new coils soon.

Ok, ...you dont have to start the car to check the coils, just turn the ignition on for a little bit. They will warm up. If they are not getting warm then your coils are no good......or your battery is dead. Heh
