I did the self compression check by removing the front plugs and turning my e-shaft "psssss, *no sound*, psthump" rear rotor i did the same for "pssssssss, pssssss, pssssss" rear rotor seems to have phenominal compression. If my motor is blown i'm more than likely parting my car out and will probably never buy another rotary powered car, i've hated my expirence with them.
|
Oy vey, don't give up that easily. You should get a compression tester and test it properly. They're cheap enough, I think I paid $25 for mine.

Is it hard to start and feels like it has no power? That sucks, my experiences have been excrutiatingly pleasurable.
|
I'm sorry, but i've hated my expirence with my 7, it's been an educational expirence though. I've learned alot about the cars and about the motors, and now i want nothing to do with these cars and motors, they're not practical engines, they get terrible fuel economy, i have to do half an oil change inbetween my oil change, their power output isn't very impressive, worst of all these motors don't last long at all.

Alot of blown motors are due to what we in the military call "Operator Headspace and Timing." What exactly happened? |
what year is your 7

how do you know 18years

The reason i'm so pissed is because i just got it back from the shop 6 months ago and spent 3k in "repairs" i wish i would have known what i do now about cars or i would have NEVER taken it to a dealership.

Learning them yourself is the only way to go with these cars. J |
My mother took it to the dealer for me as a "surprize" yeah, i was surprized... i'm still pissed that she would do that without my permission, the car is registered and insured under my name, not hers. She completely wasted $3k to make me "happy" and all it did was piss me off. Money is tight for us, she's a single parent trying to pay the bills as a school teacher, i can't believe she'd waste $3k like that.

I don't think you learned anything from the experience, you bought a used car and determined the issue was the rotary engine, which is unfortunate because unless you REALLY laern something from this you'll have a similar experience with your future used car purchases. What needs to be taken away from this is, you bought an old used car, you some problems, how well did you look over the car when you bought it, did you take it to a mechanic, how well did the preivous owner maintain it?
All thses and several HUNDRED other questions should be asked when you buy an older used car and yet all you will ask next time you go shopping is "Does it have a rotary engine". I understand your frustration, but I hope you take something more away from it. My guess is you are fairly young and prolly havent owned many cars, let's just hope you don't look back on this car as one of the MANY bad vehicle purchase decisions. |
i know it sucks to have your car engine die. mines expired less than a year after i bought it. it did have close to 170k miles and i beat on it. so i kinda understand your frustation. but dont blame it all on the engine itself. i dunno if it ever ran good or at least decent, but there could have been a few of things that made the engine not idle correctly. it is an extremely old car things are bound to to stop operating correctly or get worn out.
all i can say is that u sound like u never had that true love for the rotary engine. go get a civic.(and when u realise that u were just mad and didnt mean anything u said bout the rotary, disregard what i just said) |
I think i loved it TOO much is the problem.
|
I didn't know anything about the car when i bought it, i barely even knew what a rotary engine was. The guy lied to me and i assumed he was correct because i knew nothing about the motors. I've learned from my mistakes and if i ever did consider buying another rx-7 i'll know the right questions to ask and what to look out for. It's just a shame i'm going to have to part with my gsl-se. Maybe i'll get lucky and be rear ended or smashed into by a drunk driver before the engine goes completely out.
|
where are you located?

Yeah, when I bought my first rx7 I knew nothing about rotary's either...funny that.... anyway, its obviously your choice what you decide to do from now, asking our opinion will only get you bias as we are true rotary fans. Rotarys supply a lot of pain, even for experienced rotary guru's, but they also supply a shitload of fun and if you are willing to learn, will give you a vast knowledge of an engine that many a skilled 4, 6 or 8 cyl mechanic won't even touch, but more importantly, it will give you the added satisfaction of knowing that every inch of power and fun your getting is from your own workmanship. (unless your a cheque-book racer).
Heed phins advice, and if you decide to let go, learn from your mistakes. Your not the first to give up (hereonout comes to mind) and I'm sure you won't be the last, just think about what you really wanted out of it from the beginning and whether those goals are still achievable. my 2c (from someone with a 84 shell, an unregistered 81 with a blown motor and a T2 halfcut.) https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png |
you spent 3,000 on repairs for a FB? and i think you're expecting way too much out of that car that is most likely older than you

I'm located in Terre Haute, IN. I lied, i'm not giving up, this is only the begining, i've now realized this blown motor is the best thing that could happen to me. I'm rebuilding this motor more than likely myself and street porting it. I may try to get ahold of s5 rotors. I wish i had a job.

Strangest thing, i did the "compression check" again and now i have too good "puffs" and one "putt" when i'm turning the pulley by hand 2 1/2 turns are hard the last 1/2 turn feels like there's nothing in my motor. What's up with this?

Even if i had one shot seal, it would cause two sides of the rotor face to not get compression. I'm simply baffled.
|
Just one missing puff means a bad/stuck side seal.
Your apex seals might be ok then. J |
yup. do the atf treatment thing and then recheck compression.
|
Dont give up. I believe in the power of rotary engines. I wish I had one but in Poland I can be only dreamin' about it....
|
Too late to go back now, the motor is ready to be pulled. I've found so much wrong with my car in the process. I plan on putting s5 rotors into it, s5 intake manifold, and an s5 tranny.
