whats up everyone??? i have a 12a from an 82 gs in my datsun 520 pickup. as i was runningf around, i noticed oil burning on my exhaust. when i checked, it looked like it was from my tranny since it looked to be coming out the rear seal. by the time i was almost home, it shut off. no power and very hard to start back up. when it did start it sounded crappy and was shaking badly. checked the oil and there was NONE!!!! my guess is that it was motor oil leaking but how? how bad did i mess up the motor? any chance that it can be saved or should i just get another one? anyone had this happen to them? im new to the rotary scene so any help will be graetly appreciated. thanks!!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blush.gif

pull your spark plugs. if theres a lot oil on them the control rings are bad and might of destroyed the motor.
the only way to tell if the motor is rebuildable, is open it up. |
yeah sounds like the oil came out.
pull it apart and see |
yeah i pulled the plugs and the rear housing was spitting out oil. i guess now i can do the porting i wanted to do next summer. hopefully its not destroyed. thanks a bunch guys!!!!

yeah it sucks royally, and i just got it running right. back to the drawing board.....

this happened to me...
alls i needed was new bearings. but i only drove it like that for about half a mile. you might need a new e-shaft if you drove real far like that. |
im keeping my fingers crossed. i did drive it for quite a while. so i know its shot. and to top it off, while taking out the motor last night, it slipped and fell on my finger. now i have a big hole on it. imma leave it alone for at least a week. lol

just a lil hole on the finger. chain on lift had a lil slack and it gave on my finger... ouch. heres another question, what would be the best port job for a 12a and still be somewhat streetable. its not a daily driver but id like to take it out on a long drive once in a while. ive heard of half bridge, full bridge. im deff not going peripheral. too much for me. im leaning towards a nice big streetport. any insight on the advantages of each? thanks!!!! |

That all depends. I have talked to alot of biulders about ports, and they all have told me that a half-bridge is a bad idea. not all the power and all the drivability issues. a street port will give you about 10~15% more power in the mid to top end. If you are looking for a fun and smewhat scary motor without the drivability issues look at having the motor biult to do 10k safely (i.e. race windowed bearings, high pressure oil pump, lightened rotrs etc.) that in combo to the street port will give you a motor that will keep up with alot of rides out there and still be fun and reliable. |
i have been leaning towards the streetport. it sounds like the way to go with the least issues....

Stick with the street port. Only time you go with a BP or a PP is when you can have a free flowing loud exhaust system. Try to restrict it in anyway and itll go slower then a street port.
