I consider myself a considerable problem solver, and I think I can fix it my self I just need some direction.

I have an '84 RX7, manual, 1.1L that wont start. It will turn over. I sprayed ether in the carb and still no fire. I put DeIcer in the fuel tank, thinking that the lines were frozen. Could the starter be bad? Is it in the plugs and ignition? How do I test for these things? Or is in the fuel? New fuel pump?

Please help. I need my car running by friday. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

j9fd3s 01-21-2003 04:31 PM

are you getting spark? does the fuel pump run? it needs air, fuel, and spark to run, so start eliminating stuff

mike

812Little 01-21-2003 04:37 PM

How do I test for each of these?

Thanks for the quick response.

812Little 01-21-2003 04:38 PM

Oh, its getting air.

j9fd3s 01-21-2003 04:46 PM

well go check spark, and see what happens

mike

812Little 01-21-2003 06:30 PM

I have spark coming from the wires, the fuel pump is kicking on (I think I can hear it), but I took out a spark plug it doesnt look like a normal plug. Are there any differences? I took some pictures how do i post them?

I think this will work? Here is a few pictures tell me what you all think.

j9fd3s 01-21-2003 09:36 PM

i think it might be flooded, clean off the plugs and put em back. the pics didnt work

mike

812Little 01-21-2003 10:21 PM

I think it could be flooded, the plugs smell real strong and have a bit of moisture on them.

Here is a link that might work, so you can tell me (anyone) if they seem ok. The gap looks different than the rest of plugs I have seen.

Sounds like its flooded. You need to burn off the excess gas(A lighter works good).Put the plugs in and pull the pump fuse out. Then crank it over a few times till it sounds like it wants to fire then burn the extra gas off and repeat till the engine starts with the fuse out still.Once the gas in the engine is burnt then put the fuse back in and start the car as normal.Hope this helps you out.

j9fd3s 01-21-2003 10:29 PM

yeah those worked, those plugs like to flood, get some ngk's

mike

812Little 01-21-2003 10:33 PM

if I just get new plugs, will that work? instead of burning them and unpluging things? I think they are old

It might.Depends on how much gas there is in the engine.Rotaries go thru plugs fairly quick so it would be in your best interest to change them.I think I'll start changing mine with every oil change to be on the safe side.Make sure to start it with the pump fuse out so it burns out the gas in the engine first tho.

OK, sounds good, thanks for the help. Any suggestions for the plugs? (part #s or type?)

Racer X 01-21-2003 10:46 PM

I just use the normal NGKs.They're all 4 prong so it doesn't really make that much difference

Shpook 01-21-2003 11:09 PM

Of course there are Platimun series out there, and you can pay like $7.00 a plug. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

812Little 01-21-2003 11:14 PM

are these better, the NGK plugs on MazdaTrix were 7 something for 2, I think.

Shpook 01-21-2003 11:40 PM

well, the NGK's on MazdaTrix I believe are the same ones you can buy at your local Bennett or Discount. Of course you pay around $4 a plug there, so MazdaTrix is a lil cheaper. Let me hunt down those Platinum series for you.....

$ 31.XX each? is this right? Why?

Shpook 01-22-2003 11:31 AM

Lol, Iridium is a pretty expensive metal, though cheaper than Platinum, it's a lot harder to manufacture.

BTW - Here's those NGK Platinum plugs: http://www.rx7trix.com/store/customer/home.php?cat=89

812Little 01-22-2003 11:33 AM

86-91 but mine is an 84 will they still work ok?

Shpook 01-22-2003 11:45 AM

lmao Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. Hmm, lemme go find the 1st Gen plugs. I think 2nd and 3rd Gen have a different plug bore than the 1st Gen, but I could be mistaken. Gimme a few minutes, I've got to try to find the plugs for 1st Gen...... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

812Little 01-22-2003 04:34 PM

I went to the parts store, and bought 4 BR8EQ plugs. The guy said that they were the only NGK plug the car called for, does this sound correct? $8 a piece, seemed a bit much but I need the to run by Friday.

Now if it would get above 10 degrees I could deflood the engine.

j9fd3s 01-22-2003 05:23 PM

yup those are the right plugs

mike

Do you know what fuse this is?

It is 12 degrees outside and 2 inches of snow is on the ground, I wish I was in a heated garage. I have to be at a family thing Friday night.

812Little 01-23-2003 12:29 PM

I took all the plugs out to look at them, and I had some time while the battery is charging. The back two plugs where dripping wet, and gunked up. It looks like oil, it is dark and crudy and wont light. I am cleaning them off before I put them back in. How do I get the rest of the oil/gas in the hole to disappear? I understand the oulling the fuse of the pump, do I put the old plugs in and crank it without the pump on. I s there something I can clean the holes out with?

You pull the Pump fuse.Listed as your fuel pump fuse.My plugs were dark brown from all the flooding they went thru.I changed them and now it starts great.

Smog Fighter 01-23-2003 10:09 PM

The way I was taught in smog school was to; leave the plugs out, no choke, wide

open throttle (unplug the coils so no spark. we don't want any underhood fires)

and crank it for 15-20 seconds. It will sound funny with no plugs.

if you have a friend, have them crank while you watch the plug holes for liquid spray.

liquid meaning fuel.

Yeah, that way works good too.I forgot about that one.I used it a couple of times. Its fun watching fuel pore out of your engine.Just make sure the EGI or pump fuse is pulled.EFI is EGI and Carb is pump fuse.

812Little 01-24-2003 05:16 PM

I checked the fuses in the car and the only one that I would think would do anything is the engine fuse. I tried that and no luck. On the panel there is no fuel related fuse, that I know of.

Any help????

Racer X 01-24-2003 06:52 PM

ON yours it must be the engine fuse.If the plugs come out smelling and dripping gas then then still prolly flooded.Pull the plugs and fuse then crank it with the coil wires pulled out.You should see gas after a couple of cranks come out the plug holes.
