Hi guys, So I have done a fair amount of reading of the FAQ's but I guess some of the stuff just goes a bit over my head, as I am not really all the mechanically inclined.



To start Ill say that I just bought my 79 RX7 about a week ago, and am very impressed with it, and want to take good care of it, so that is why I am asking these questions.



Just to clarify, I dont intend to use this car for anything other than casual driving(I guess this is where I was confused a bit from reading the faqs, just didnt know if people were doing things for racing the car or just driving), with the occasional gleeful speeding on the backroads.



First: If using nonsynthetic oil, what kind would you suggest?

If using Synthetic?



Second:I read a bit about people adding oil to their gas tank, is this for casual drivers too? What is accomplished by this? If I should be doing this, what kind?



Third:This truely is a newb question but here goes, what kind of RPM's should I be looking to shift at? I get a sort of umm...pop pop sound while I'm shifting sometimes, is this from shifting it too low of RPM's?

The engine burns oil by design, any non synthetic is fine for street use. Stray away from synthetics as they dont burn as well, or at all in some cases.



Adding oil to the fuel aka premix, is for those that have removed the mechanical oil metering pump from thier engine.

(OMP adds oil in small amounts as a seal lubricant which is partially burned off during each combustion cycle)

the OMP (oil metering pump) does fail and there is no real way to know that it's bad without tearing it apart. because of that a lot of people remove them and block it off and run premix. i just had my engine rebuilt and they suggested castrol GTX (non-synthetic) as that's what they run in all their cars. rx-7's do backfire quite a bit so that may be all that it is but keep in mind that the rotary is a lot like a motorcycle engine, it loves higher rpm's. at about 3.5 or 4 x1000 rpm's would be the lowest i'd ever shift or else i'd be close to getting jerked around lol. best of luck and welcome to the forums!

If the engine has some miles on it, I'd use Castrol 20W-50. It's what I've used in my 13BT and I can't complain about it's performance. I drive the car maybe once a month and pretty much beat on it. Once or twice a year I take the wifey to the dragstrip and let her beat on it. It's the original motor with over 100k on it.



That fact aside, I believe that pretty much any oil of an appropriate weight will be fine. I always ran 10W40 in my RX-2 years ago. I'd buy whatever major brand was on sale. The key is to change it regularly. The brand isn't really important.



If the car is stock and uses the oil metering pump, I'd stick with conventional oil. I don't know for sure that synthetic would get you in trouble, but there seems to be a number of people who think it would.

remove the oil metering pump and run synthetic in the engine.. and premix in the tank. Even with the OMP installed, it does a horrible job of lubricating the seals. Anyone that has torn down a rotary engine has seen the "comet trail" leading away from the oil metering hole from where it's not lubricating much away from it's entry point.
