I am replacing all my hoses and thermostat at the moment. Everything was going fine until I took the thermostat housing off. Directly under the stat found these pieces perched right over the small hole going into the block? They have a slight curve to them, and have a beveled edge on both. Are these pieces of the

water pump impeller? I could tell by how the housing was installed the mechanic was less than knowledgeable. Gobs of blue silicone, and the stat was offset to one side, letting coolant flow past. Should I pull off the pump and replace it, if indeed these are pieces of the impeller. Or will it effect cooling that much? Help if you can, thanks!

it is a possibility of being part of the impeller, i would at least take it off just to inspect it, it's quick and easy to remove and replace so its worth it.

I agree thats the impeller. Looks like the fins broke off. You might want to check the inetgrity of the housing. Mine cracked from something like that.... If it is cracked you can do one of two things I think, replace it with another one from another car, or the way I will be going. I am going to put a davies electric water pump with an adapter fitting. you get the best of both worlds. a self adjusting system independent of the motor, no belt slippage at high rpms. anyway my thats my 2 cents

Well, it wasn't leaking or overheating, and this wasn't a recent thing that I know of. The pieces have some rust where they broke off, so it's been a while. I will change the pump eventually, right now it's a "need to drive it" basis. I will keep a close watch on the temp gauge. The scenario in my head is the mechanic who did the work previously was the cause. He might have cranked the engine over before he had the pump on correctly. The same sealant is on the stat housing, the water pump, and the front cover. All probably done on the same visit. (((shudder))),,,,BB

never seen an rx7 imperller fail like that, but it happens all the time to other cars

So, is this a low quality junk water pump, or just a bad error during installation? The next will be a new one from my work, if new ones are still available that is. Along with a full set of Gates belts. I've had those cheapo dayco belts twist longways between two pulleys.,,,,BB

it could be either, most likely a low quality pump, i dont see how youd screw up the install.



new ones are available, mazda is expensive, but they will last for decades. npn or npw is good.
