OK.I bought a 79 RX7 from a friend of mine.He said he would put a 4 barrel and intake on it for me included with price of the car.The car is coming from N.J.After he gets it running and all he is shipping it to me.Long story short is the carb and intake is installed but it dose not idle smooth. It surges up and down.Any ideas? The sooner i or my friend fixes this the sooner i can get my car. Please help.

No one has a idea?It started and ran fine, swapped intake and carb.It runs, but at idle it surges.Vaccum leak?It dosent do it when you revv up.???
|
what other modifications have been done? idle surge can be caused by a couple things with a carb, the most simple one being a vacuum leak or incorrectly hooked up vaccuum lines. unfortunately without knowing what the carb needs for idle controls may be a hindrance in figuring out what's wrong :/ you can try adjusting the idle screw but no guarantees that'll fix the surging. almost every carb has two small adjustment screws on them. one for idle control and the other for fuel flow. see if your friend has the manual for the carb to find where they're at and see if it tells you what the vacuum lines need to be hooked to

after talking with a friend he also suggested it may be the choke. is yours electric or vacuum choke?

It has a electric choke. |
check when you start it that the choke opens up after warmup, if not then there's an electrical bug not letting it open. even then it shouldn't be surging during a cold start with the choke closed. after it warms up and the choke is open, then make the adjustments to the idle screw first to get it to the right rpm, then the fuel mixture screw to run smoothly

i was just looking at your garage and i was curious what lip that is? mine's an 85 with the same drivetrain as yours, but i have sidedraft webers instead of a holley 4 bbl. I got it during this deployment so between it and my FD I'll have plenty to keep me busy for awhile haha

thanks for the quick reply.I will tell him to check the chock when he gets home from work and i will give you the heads up.thanks again. |
NP man, wait till you have a clutch line leak like i have before. you push the clutch in and go to start it like normal and the car jumps forward a few feet if it's in gear lol.

my friend messed with it today with no gain. Now it wont idle.I told him to drop the bowel and see if its nasty or not.He told me the only vaccum was the brakes and the distribator. It has to be in the carb.Wish me luck.Any other ideas? |
...........is he sure he was turning the right screws? if he was turning the fuel mixture screw on accident he'll either flood it or lean it out till the point it won't start....
|
once it's at least starting again check the timing too. I can't remember if it's the same or not but usually there's a lock bolt that you loosen and then you can turn the distributor cap to adjust the timing. i honestlydo wish you the best and wish there was more i could do :/

The person i bought this car from, bought it drove it then parked it.It started and ran good.He unbolted carb and intake, swapped it with RacingBeat intake and carb, thats it.I have no clue. |
Ohh thanks for the help.
|
I'd give racing beat a call and see what their suggestions are since it's their product.

My friends going to clean out the carb and try that before he gets a rebuild kit. This stinks. At least he is making sure yhe car is right before he sends it to me.Thanks again for all the help.
