Hi!

I have only had this car for 2 months. Never owned one before.



When I first bought the car, it didn't smoke at all. But it wouldnt pass a Smog

Check (California) either.

Too rich (high CO @ 3%) I rebuilt the carb (O.E. Nikki) and found some plugged

air bleeds as well as sludge in a vacuum circuit keeping the secondaries closed.



So, car runs better, CO is down to 1.75% but then it smoked quite a lot when

the choke was on!

After the choke turned itself off, the smoke went away. I had a new CAT installed

to pass the Smog Check, and the car passed beautifully!



A few days later, I hop in to go to work, and I notice smoke on acceleration with

choke on. ( I turned choke off and it went away almost immeadiatly)



I have no leaks, but I go through a quart in @ 2 weeks.

I did notice two nylon hoses going to the carb with oil in them, is this my problem?

I am also new to owning a rotary, but I have learned that those nylon lines with oil in them are very important to your motor. They are oil injection lines for lubricating the seals in the motor. If you have ever owned a 2 cycle, it is kind of the same priciple only you don't have to buy the special 2 cycle oil. My 83 RX7 with a 12a also smokes on start up, once it warms up it stops. I was slightly worried about mine when it did that and then I learned what I just told you. That is why your car uses oil. The oil that it injects to the motor comes from the oilpan. As far as the amount of oil yours is using, I don't know whether that is high, low, or normal. You can do a search on here and find discussions on other rotary owners using premix instead of depending on the motor to inject its own oil. I hope this helps you. I just read about this system in my Haynes manual just about an hour ago.

Ist things first;

How long did the car sit before you bought it?

Next* Check the OMP to see if your getting to much oil threw those nylon lines as you call them.

Next* Buy a Haynes Manual for all the goods on your New Great investment.

Next* RX-7s Burn approx 1quart of oil every 2-3000 miles because the Seals and other goodies i.e. to long to explain need this extra Lube for cooling and none of the critical components to fail. So when you first start up a non-boinger motor it will inject oil into the fuel system that in turn gives you the smoke until it has warmed up and continued operation. When you shut down your RX some of the Oil Stays in the Carb and Intake which in turn shows up as smoke the next time you start it up. Of course the longer it has set, the more this is prone to happen.



If you are consuming 1qt of oil every 2 weeks that seems either a miss cal on the OMP or you need to run the ATF fix (Info found throughout this site).

P.S. It's better if you not drive your RX till the Choke Has Completly Returned. It is Leaning or Riching out the Carb<<<Depending on how the Computer Bullshit>>>was setup. This can also contibute the the Smoke Thingie

how many miles on the engine? does it smoke all the time now? if so how bad? I had one do the same thing to me. ran great, never smoked, then one day it was all over. One of the oil seals in the engine went. it was burning oil like a pig! I hope you don't have the same mis-fortune as me!

I don't know the history of the car.

the guy brought it in to get it smogged, and it grossly failed. he said he just put a

motor in it and was driving it. he was fed up and wanted to buy a boat so my wife

offered him some money and he sold it to us.



Get this, I am am A.S.E. certified Master technition, and have never even heard of the

OMP. Just goes to show that you still learn things, even after 10 years!



my experience with Haynes manuals have found them lacking. but I guess I am trying

to find stuff that is beyond the general scope of the teardowns they do.



I will go and buy the Haynes as you recommend.

It shows the way to adjust the OMP?

omp oil metering pump it injects a small amount of oil into the engine through the carb. (those little plastic lines).

To be completely honest, i would disconnect the OMP because i find it to unreliable. I just premix, having that little bit of reassurance. If your Oil Injection fails, you are in deep ****. See if you can find pics of a rotor housing that used premix, compared to one that relied on the oil injection. It'll make you think twice about your Oil Injection.

Well, I measured the output today it's @2cc/6 min.



when I left work, I didn't need to use the choke, so I didn't.

She still smoked above 3000rpm for the first 2-3min.



Would not having a thermostat have anything to do with this problem?

It never warms up past the first mark.

My 82 GSL burns about a quart every 1500 miles.
