i'm in the process of upgrading to a 84 GSL-SE from a 83 GSL that i had for 3 years. so i am a total rotard; i know the basics. i'm just looking for some se-specific post-purchase things to check/clean/fix as a pre-emptive measure.



i was thinking i would go through and make sure my throttle cable is lubed and the linkage is adjusted correctly, and to verify that the 5+6 ports are doing their thing alright (i'm 99% sure they're working fine). but i can't really think of anything else as i am super-new to the 13b and fuel injection.



also, as far as the intake system goes.. would i stand to gain any performance by switching to some sort of short-ram system with a cone, or does the stock system work fine for a stock-ported motor? i do think the underhood area looks very attractive stock, and i would only consider mucking around with that stuff if it would help a good bit.



i don't plan on doing anything ludicrous to this car, just a RB exhaust system. it's such a nice shell that i'd feel bad pulling stuff out and replacing things all willy nilly. hell, i even like the stock suspension the way it is. it's nice and comfy (as opposed to my former 83's).



finally - computer question. i've heard good things about microtech ecus from a couple of the local fellas. the primary use of the car will be shooting over the cascade passes here in WA during the spring/summer. i'm thinking that due to the drastic altitude change in the pass runs, it would be beneficial to invest in a microtech to help keep the a/f ratio reasonable up high. would a mod like this be worth it, or will the stock EGI system work fine? my carb'd 12a didn't take too kindly to stevens as it was getting way too much gas at the top, even with the tired fuel pump.

Verify/adjust your TPS.

Put grease or something on the 6 port shafts and go for a spirited drive. Then check for function by seeing if the grease has been wiped away/moved by the actuating of the rod.



The AFM bolts right to the stock air box, so no short ram system. You can replace the air box, but I think that a drop in would be just as good.



Get the mazdatrix exhaust made for 6 port operation. you want those to function still.



Your major HP bottle neck is the AFM. Getting an aftermarket ECU will allow you to remove it. That said there is a TON of tuning involved and you may NEVER get it to run as liveable as stock.

You may wanna do simple mods like cold air induction and electric thermo fan and even maybe electric water pump to squeeze some more HP. Well, more to make your Eng bay neater.



remove rats nest?

well, by going to a good engine managment system, you will have much better adjustability for the altitude compensation. via absolute pressure sensors. Plus, in the future, if large overlap is induced with your rebuild, a good ecu can supply the fuel much better. Motec and Autronic are both great choices... Some cheaper brands such as Haltech, Microtec are not bad either.
