85 GS will not start on its own, will start with starting fluid, but will not continue to run. Spark appears to be strong. It doesn't seems to be getting fuel (fuel pump works). Changed the fuel filter just in case it was clogged...still won't start. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif Suggestions???

i had one where the emissions unit was bad, it would run the fuel pump with the key off, and then when the engine was cranking, it would turn the pump off. car would start, and then die.

is there a fuel pump relay or possibly a fuse thst could cause this? I have an 85 with a similar problem. The pump doesn't seem to be running, because there's no pressure back at the filter by the tank. Car cranks strong but just wont fire.

incidentally, what else could make the pump not work, short of the pump itself?

in the 84-85's theres the fuel pump relay which is triggered from the emissions unit.

the 68-83's just run the pump off the key

is there a way of seeing if the FP relay is bad when you pull it? here's the issue: car cranks but wont fire. i pulled the fuel filter back by the tank and there was no pressure in the lines. there is at least a couple of gallons in the tank. I can't hear the pump running with the key in, but i dont remember how loud FB pumps are.

First make sure you have fuel in your tank. Don't trust the gauge. If you have fuel, pull the fuel line off the carburetor and see if its pumping fuel with the key on and with the key on and cranking. If fuel doesn't come out of the line, reconnect it and check for voltage at the fuel pump with the key on, key off, and cranking the engine. If the fuel pump relay is the problem you can jumper it (ghetto fix) or dig into the manual for further diagnosis. I'm not familiar with the fuel pump relay's operation, so I can't give you tips without dragging out my manuals. If you have voltage when you are supposed to and it still doesn't pump fuel you have a clogged line or filter.
