On a 85 Rx7 GSL. My u joints are going out, do I need to get another driveshaft or can I play around with it and make one that I have off a 80 rx7 gs to work? Any opinions?

I am not sure, but I don't think they are interchangeable. I believe it's 79-82, and 83-85 that are the same.

yea thats what I think to.. And you can't just change U-joints on the 85 but I know I did it on the 80 quite a while back.. That sucks b/c the shaft is 250 from Mazdatrix.. I have no money..

I can get you one cheaper than that or just have a machine shop replace the joints

I have to agree with 79rx7.Just take to a machine shop and have them press out the stockers and put in a new pair of joints in it.

I don't think you can replace the joints on mine though? they don't see them or something dumb, that I can't fnd.

On my 83 RX7 gs, I was told by our best driveshaft man in town that he cannot replace the u joints in my shaft. You may check with your local machine shop to see if you can find someone like the guy I'm talking to who said he could make a custom shaft using a shaft out of an older Dodge rear wheel drive car. I have the part number on the new u joint to find the type of car to look for. The part number is 5-1306X. I don't know what brand it is, but I think they are pretty universal and easy to look up. I hope that will help.

hey thanx man. I have an 80 drive shaft and flanges laying around off another car I am going to try to swap the whole thing. see if we can make something work. Cause I am broke. if not It will just sit for a while. Thanx

Of course, if you were to have a custom shaft made, then get the strongest u-joints on the planet that will fit, and best yokes, and all, and that is ONE more part you will never have to replace.
