Are the rear disk brakes interchangeable with the drums? Or would you need a whole different setup. I found a place where I can get rear disk brakes off a 79 or an 83 rx7.



Also I've heard second gens have a better electronic ignition, then the first gen setup. what would I need to convert that. I have both the coils and the igniters off a second gen.

the swap to rear discs you need to get the whole axle housing, its best to swap complete assemblies.



to conver to the fc ignition, you also need the crank angle sensor and the fc ecu

Your better off converting to DLIDFIS then a FC ignition unless your swapping in a EFI engine.Theres a thread I posted about it I posted in the FAQ's section.

go into more detail about the whole disc swap, i was considering it not too long ago in future mods.

well you need to find a complete axle from a gsl, and the e brake cables. its about 10 bolts and a couple of brake lines

Or find a GSL if you want to stay with the 4x110 pattern.4 bolt mustang rims fit it for custom wheels in case you're wondering.And take the entire rear off of it including the e-brake cables and I think you'll need the hard lines as well.At least then you'll have a LSD.I'll need one badly as soon as the NOS shows up here. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png :squint:

There is a way to convert a drum rear end to a disc rear end without having to replace everything (or so I've been told). You will need the rear calipers and hand brake cables from a 4 wheel disk version ('81 or '82), and the front brake mounting plate from an RX3 (yes, that's right, an RX3!). Apparently the rear disc brakes on an RX7 have the same mounting configuration as the front brakes on an RX3. The rotors may even be the same, but I'm not sure.



You need to strip the rear brakes and backing plate off the RX7, then mount the RX3 front disc mounting plate to the same 4 bolts that held the drum brake assembly onto the axle. You should then be able to mount the RX7 rear calipers and attach the hand brake cables from a full disc rear end. You wil also have to make up some new brake lines (but that's a good idea anyways). This will also require the rear bearing to be removed to getthe old backing plate off, or you'll have to cut off the old backing plate. It's probably a good idea to repalce the bearings anyways while you're in there because we all know how often they wear out.



I saw a completed rear end done this way on an Australian '79 RX7, so it should work in NA as well. I will be converting a rear end that I have as soon as I track down the RX3 mounting plates.

That works but swapping the rear is easier and quicker.Yeah the Rx2,3 and 7 run the same 4x110 bolt pattern so either way it works.
