What would the benefits of a 12a turbo over a 13b-RE/S4 TII(or S5) engine? I am just trying to weigh out some options and what would be the simplest thing to do, while still having the reliability factor, and of course power factor. Anyone on this board that runs a 12a turbo? Anything good or bad?
And the 12a turbo engines from rotaryshack.com, I can't tell if it is carbed or FI? Anyone know off hand? And is there any other place that sells them? If I am not mistaken, the 12a turbo's came out of certain JDM FB's? Thanks Justin |
dont have to replace the front cover

A buddy of mine has the 12a turbo in his GSL-SE. It is a fuel injected motor and will actually run perfect with the factory computer and wire harness. They have a really small turbo on them that restricts the power quite a bit, but I have heard of people upgrading them to an S4 or S5 turbo. We also have a 13B-RE installed and running in a GSL-SE as well with a Microtech computer.
Cool, thanks alot for the info. I would just use the factory turbo for the time being, but would upgrade to something bigger, just not sure what yet. I will probably start on the swap in the winter, ONCE I buy the car. LOL Thanks alot, and thanks nopenis. |
no prob jeepy

The parts are cheaper too.

the 12a turbo is the japanese equivalent of the gsl-se 13b. they got the turbo cause its cool, we got the na motor cause we complain when it breaks. performance between the 2 stock setups is not all that different, of course the turbo is more moddable
|
What would the hp and lb-ft of the 12a turbo be? I know the 13b GSL-SE engine is somewhat impressive. I am just not as familiar with the 12a's, let alone a turbo slapped onto it.
its rated at 165jis which is like 150ish saehp, gsl-se is 135hp sae. |
Oh, that does not seem to bad at all. I just wanted something different than what everybody else is swapping in. Thanks Mike |
doing something different is always cool man, but theres a reason most people do the same thing, it's the simplest, most power gains and overall just best way to go. Not saying 12a turbo is bad at all, just make sure your not spending too much money on it just to be different ya know?
Yeah, you do have a point. Just trying to get some information. I really want to do the 13b-RE swap after seeing DirectFreak's turbo'd GSL-SE. That thing looks bad ass, and just looks STOCK. Thanks alot nopenis. |

I have thought about it hard, and I think I will keep the engine completely stock. It is such a low mileage FB that it would be quite silly to throw a 13b-RE into it.
****, it has only 54k on the chassis. It is in such great shape. I will buy a higher mileage FB and do the swap by the winter. |
the factory 12a turbos are fuel injected...same as the SE efi , usally we put a nikki or sidedraft carb on the 12a turbo motors to simplify the setup.. the 12a turbos are bad ass but dont come often... i get one about every 6 months
p.s. these motors come 8.5 to 1 compression and have huge exhaust ports!! yeahh |

its on the home page
http://www.rotaryshack.com/ and 8.5 to 1 compression is the lowest factory compression available... its not very high.. the rx8 motors are 10.0 to 1, thats high |

that 8.5:1 compression just seems high for a boosted motor.
i am thinking of doing the swap more and more. directfreak and dysfntcnl85 has inspired me to do the swap. i just won't be tuning the beast. |
i dont know if this is relevant to rotarys, but my bro has the stock 8.5:1 compression in the 350 he has in his truck, and he recently put a supercharger on. so idk, but i think it should be fine |
it's all the same across the board. i know guys who have 9:1 pistons in boosted civics, and they run perfectly fine. but N/A for a civic compression wise is like 10:1 or even 11:1 from I have seen.
i think you don't want the compression to be so low, but not so high. 8.5:1 sounds like a doable number. and I will be doing the swap now. i officially have a hookup for garret, turbonetics, obx, and hks turbo kits. i get them at invoice price. SWEET!! |
how long will a NA 12a transmission hold up with the turbo 12a
the 12a turbo used the same trans as the gsl-se, so it depends on your right foot, anywhere from 40k to 250k miles... |
I'v ran the '81 stock trans in my car for years 13BT swap
over almost 300ftlb of torque. And no problems. Its how you drive your car. You can see pics of it if my old site still works.. chris32472@geocites.com I am formally tubofb on the club forums and we currenly have a '79 in the shop for that swap. However we are running a Mivrotech and a small FMIC
the 12a turbo used the same trans as the gsl-se, so it depends on your right foot, anywhere from 40k to 250k miles...
