does any one have info on relocating a battery to the storage bin on the 1st gens

I remember seeing one where a guy was boasting about installing his in the
pass. side storage bin. I just can't remember where... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif |
I did mine in the passenger storage bin with no problem. Used a Miata battery and ran the positive cable from the starter, down the frame rail with the fuel lines, through a hole in the floor. Drilled a couple of holes for the battery hold down bolts and that was it.

Yeah the post that direct linked you to was the one i got no REAL responses to. Here is how i'm going to do mine:
Tie down the battery in the pass bin. Make the neg terminal go to the seatBELT bolt, about less than a foot away. pos goes to the starter, and then the other wire goes somewhere (the smaller red wire). I forgot. I'll talk to my buddy carl as soon as i get the money for wires and a tie down. ~Geoff |
Have you seen those really small "dry cell" type batteries?
I saw one on a '93 twin turbo that was @ 10x8x6 inches. The guy said it weighed 10 or 12 lbs. Oops, sorry. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683621.gif |
dont forget to mount the batterey well, we worked on an fd this weekend with a battery relocation, and the battery is loose. it appears as if the battery was moving around and it loosened the cables. we arent sure yet but it may have been bad enough to lower the voltage enough to slow down the fuel pump and pop the motor

Especially if the + cable grounded itself out on the body or at the hole it
passes through. Another thing to think about is having a acid resistant battery tray with drainage if your thinking about a normal liquid-acid-type battery. Or a marine style battery box. just a thought. |
I've got an odessey lead-acid battery, odessey make the gel cell batteries as well. The lead-acid battery I have is a completely sealed, zero-maintenance, lead-acid. It can be mounted in any position except completely inverted. The gel-cells can be mounted anywhere at all, but they are $$ around AUS$300-400. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bling.gif

I am going to use a optima red top and a marine box. mount it to the floor in the bin. what size battery cable should I use.
|
I used the typical 4 gauge wire that you get in an car amp installation kit. The one I used had like 20 ft of red 4 gauge, connectors etc. I bolted the negative cable to the seatbelt bolt.
|
I have seen people use 0 or 00 arc welding wire. It has a cross section of @ 1/2in.

the pc680? i have one for the fc its great except it doesnt like to sit with a draw, you gotta unplug it
mike I got it for AU$60. Story: My friend owns a RAC battery franchise, some asian guy called him out cos he's battery was flat, turns out his g/f had been sitting in the car with the stereo cranked for 3 hours (2x Alpine V12 amps) and it died. He bought a new battery for $100, my friend took the old one (which happens to be the odessey) and says bye. My friend (knowing they're good for 300-400 full cycles), takes it home, charges it on the battery charger, it tests perfect, then sells it to me for $60. Win, win. |

Yo don't need any sort of box w/ the optima red top battery. Thats why it is what it is. Its like waterproofing plastic.... You dont' have to do it. ~Geoff |

This is from the Optima site Gas Leakage FAQ So a "vented to atmosphere" box would be a good thing. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png |
I've never known anyone to run an optima in a box. *shrugs* go for it if you want, i'm not going to.
