85 GSL won’t run very long but starts up after time

Hi
I’m new to this forum and how forums work, so here goes.
When I bought this 85 RX7 GSL I was told that the rust from the old tank was clugging the fuel filter, but that stopped after cleaning the tank and 3 fuel filters. I had a mechanic look at it and he rebuilt the carb and tried to get it to run but after he was done it won’t even start. I live in Idaho and even the Mazda dealers don’t have any idea how to work on this. Very frustrating.
I have been told by a guy at the parts store that is probably a sensor for the carb but he couldn’t find anything. I’m hoping someone could help out with this issue I’m sure you all have had with dealing with older cars and it’s a rotary engine and some guys don’t know what I’m talking about.
Any help would be great!
Its is a nice ride when it runs.

welcome to the board. :)

first of all, as a general rule, don't listen to "the guy at the parts store". if a person does not own an Rx-7 or is familiar with Rx-7s and rotaries, it's probably in your best interest to let the things they say go in one ear and right out the other. :)

another thing is put a fuel filter just before the carburetor. it's cheap insurance against any filth in the lines getting to the carburetor itself.

this process will be tricky since there is no way to tell how well the carburetor was rebuilt. how is your knowledge of carburetors? you may have to troubleshoot this by instructions, or find someone that knows these cars and the Nikki carburetor to do it for you.

first, get a copy of the FSM: Foxed.ca

next, make sure the car starts with starter fluid or by pouring some gas down the throttles by hand.

next, see if there's fuel in the bowls. there is a sight glass on the sides of the carburetor (toward the radiator and one toward the firewall). with it being rebuilt, they should be clean and easy to see now. if there is fuel in the bowls, then see if fuel starts squirting out the primaries when you press the gas pedal.
