I got a 1985 12a RX-7...and when I go to turn it over.. all of the lights and stuff and that annoying buzzer work...and when I turn the starter on it turns slowly and makes a squeeling noise. The car has been sitting for about 4 months or so. But all of the tuneup items on it are new (oil, plugs, wires, fluids, etc.) although I haven't replaced the dist. cap or the rotor. I called a guy at a mazda place up the road and he said to just put some tranny fluid in the trailing plug holes and crank it. To lube up the apex seals. So does this sound right or does someone else have a different opinion? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/flamed.gif

well if it turns over slow its either the starter, or low battery, or maybe the cables/connections

I thought it might be the starter...It's not really slow. It turns over faster than a dead battery but a little slower than norm. Just wish I knew what the squealing noise is. Thx bro

yah the noise is wierd too, i think the starter is dying

Just remember that 12a starters are interchangable and only 12a starters.I don't think the SE's 13b starter works. Then again the 13b flywheel is the same size so I could be wrong.

I got that taken care of, the starter now works. Problem now is..I think it's the fuel pump...

No gas getting to carb, no gas in check valve, there is gas in the line past the fuel pump and the filter (replaced the filter anyway). So I'm guessing it's the fuel pump. The drivers side had alot of water in it so I hope none of the wiring is screwed. Gonna replace it tomorrow..guess I'll post again afterwards.

Also that Hot Engine Starter Assist thing is making a wierd ass squealing noise...is that normal? I just disconnected it cause it's annoying as hell. My parts car (83) doesn't have one of them.

Does the fuel pumps in rx7's make that clicking noise when you turn on the ignition? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

When you turn on the key before you start it you should be able to hear the pump operating.I know mine does.Let us know how it goes.

I pulled that Hot start out but mine before never made any noises.Worked good but I like the look of not having it there.

j9fd3s 02-12-2003 10:33 AM

yeah, you dont need the hot start thing

Well...this is the third day I've spent numerous hours on my car that I bought for 250 bucks...guess what I traced the fuel pump wiring all the way to the fuse box... and it appears the jackass that had it before me wanted to throw a stereo system in it so they used the fuel pump fuse as a remote. Well the fuse fell out one day and it just died for him on the freeway. "I broke down and it just wouldn't start"... So I go through all of the trouble of checking everything and replaced a buttload of junk from my 83 to the 85.. Today, I marvel in my own victory. The beast lives and is running like a champ. I had to adjust some crap to make it run good...but now it humms like a bee (almost literally). Thanks everyone for your help.

Finally a car that doesn't have to use 1.70 a gallon 93 octane.
