I just recently bought an 82 RX7 and ive been having some issues with it. For starters the main problem is with the transmission. Some days its will kick into reverse just fine others itll just sit still but if you rev it up and itll lurch back slowly and eventually kick into gear. Also it is having troubles getting into 3rd gear. Itll sit in second and just will not shift (its an automatic transmission btw) Then after a while (30 minutes or so of driving, I drive in the city a lot so im not shifting into higher gears until i hit the interstate). It will kick in and shift just fine. Ive checked my fluids reset the ecu etc doesnt fix the problem. Im mainly just wondering if the transmission is going out or if its a control issue. Maybe TPS or something. I noticed after running for long periods of time the exhaust system will smoke from under the car (like right near the catalytic convertor) Wondering if thats going to be an issue or if its normal. Has an oil leak too.

Other than that its a solid car 12a 118k miles. Its got the wear and tear for its age but my main concern is the transmission. If you can offer any advice on the issue please let me know id like to know how to fix it.

Sorry but I don't really know much about transmissions so I cannot really help you out there. Perhaps take it to a transmission shop that's been around for a long time. But as for some more info to provide for you the carb'd first gens aka every model except gsl-se do not have a tps. Also where is the oil leak coming from? Could be leaking from your front mount oil cooler, dowel pins, or oil pan thats collecting around the exhaust causing your car to smoke.

sounds like the trans is just worn out, may help to flush/change the fluids.

these transmissions are very simple, in the scheme of things, to rebuild, but they are old so finding someone with experience might be tricky

they do have a tps, but i'm not sure its hooked to the trans.

there is a vacuum line and a modulator valve that sometimes goes out though, it will leak atf to the engine

well I dont really think its the modulator and if it was the atf would get flushed out with the oil (this thing eats a half quart every 2-3 days.). I dont think its just worn out because when everything is going right with the car it has no problems shifting. I also noticed that sometimes when I take off from a start it will bog down and it feels like its stuttering a bit. So maybe it is worn down. Just curious mainly to see if its worth putting in the money to fix it up. I do like that car no doubt but ive got a honda accord I can drive too. I wouldnt mind making both daily drivers though and maybe eventually turning the rx7 into a project car

why does the trans use oil? that not right

psychicpsycho1 06-16-2009 05:20 AM

it doesnt use oil. he was saying that it could possibly leak the atf into the engine via a modulator. I was just saying it was doubtful that would matter considering how fast oil leaks from this thing.
