I am getting ready to assemble a 13b for my 79. I am debating which to build, 4 or 6 port, since I have a 12a and 13b sitting on the garage floor. The carbs and header have not been purchased yet. What is the opinions of those who have run these set ups?

4 port is a better design.

when it comes to "realistic" street performance, i'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter if you've got 4 or 6 ports. you'll get a pretty fast, reliable car with either one. it's when you start thinking in extremes that the 4 port makes a difference.
however, what year is the 13B? that may make your decision for you ... |
13b is from a 84 GSLse.
|
well ... that gives you the option. so i'd say build the 4-port 13B out of the 12A housings.

Now why does everyone say 4 port just out of curiousity? I have a 4 port cosmo motor in my fb and would say go with the 6 port just out of the fact that the 6 port will make more power depending on what year you drop in there. Also the gaskets are really hard to find for the 4 port if you ever need one. Try asking for a 76-78 intake manifold gasket at an autozone or something, they don't even show up on the computer. Also the rebuild and gasket kits are really expensive for a 4 port, it's like 222$ for a gasket set, while it's like 138$ for the 6 port gasket set. Just some things to think about.
Also if you want to build a 4-port I have a short block sitting at the house if you want to buy it. No front cover or oil pan though. |
I will use the standard 13b rebuild kit from Atkins for either the 4 or 6 port. The intake gasket is $7. for a 4 port 13b from MazdaTrix.
Thanks for the offer on short block, but I have 2 13b's from se's and 2 12 a's and a 13b from a series 4 on the floor now. |
