how much does a 1980 weigh stock?

i think they weigh less than the 81 and above models?

mine is completely gutted, no dash, rugs, fuel cell, even all the harness is gone. about what should it weigh?

j9fd3s 02-21-2008 12:03 PM

because of the bumpers, thermal reactor and the non high strength steel for the body the 79-80's are about 80lbs MORE stock than the 81-83's

my stock full tank of gas 79 model was about 2420lbs

my stock full tank of gas 83 limited edition was 2330lbs

my gsl-se without ps was 2540....

stripped out they can get quite light, the imsa cars in 1979-80 were 2020lbs, so in some kinda street trim 2200 should be easy

damn those heavy bumpers...i was looking at a way to get rid of them too!!!

did those imsa cars have all steel or fiberglass hood, fenders, ect...???

thanks for the info, you weighed them at a truck station?

defprun 02-21-2008 07:54 PM

My stockish 84 with most of the interior taken out was 2183

yeah we go to the dump, scale seems pretty good. i always use a full tank of gas too, cause its repeatable.

the imsa guys ran the steel bumpers right away, but fiberglass fenders, by the time 1980 rolled around they were running glass bumpers (mazdacomp used to sell em) and windows.

i think in modern times you want to keep the steel rear bumper, and run the 81 front, as its lighter. when you strip these cars down, you end up with a lot of weight on the left front, cause thats where the brakes, steering, driver and battery are. so keeping a little wieght on the rear might be a good thing

I am working on a CF/kevlar replacement for the steel equivlents. Should be less then 20lb each when I am done. They will be stronger then the steel ones too. I will keep everyone updated on that

do the 81 and up fronts bolt right on??? 83-85 any different? how much lighter you think they might be?

81 and up bumpers bolt right up, the rebar is aluminum, so they are like 10lbs instead of 25.

also if you keep the 79-80 bumpers, in the us theres an extra reinforcement in it, bolts right in (or out), and its like 6-7 lbs...

thanks...theres 2 1stb gens and the junk yard right now. imma see if i can get the bumper off them.
