alright, this is sort of two questions so bear with me.



number 1: what does it take to swap in a japanese stock 12a turbo efi engine in place of the stock american 12a (in an 83 gs). what parts/modifications are required? how difficult is it? cost? and also how good of an alternative is it?



number 2: what does it take to turbo a stock 12a? parts/mods etc.? difficulty? cost? and what kinda power/reliability are we talking? by the way, i dont know much about carbs, (for what that matters) and i live in minnesota, so cold starts ARE an issue. this is pretty much my daily driver so i dont wanna be stuck with a problematic, touchy setup that requires constant maintenance and tuning.



and in the end, which do you recommend?

1. the engine physically goes in the car exactly like any other 12a. you do have to come up with some kind of efi to run the stock 12a turbo injection.



2. the 12a turbo engine isnt all the different from the usa 12a's, basically the 12a turbo motor is a normal 12a with gsl-se center iron for the 2 injectors, and lower compression rotors. i'm thinking for driveability/cold starts you should ditch the carb and go efi. i think with a moderately sized turbo (small t04) and sane boost (10-12psi) you're looking at 250-280rwhp

blowthrought carb turbo is the most bang for your buck setup(add a turbo to your 12a and blow-through the nikki), but starting in cold weather will be an issue... efi is the way to go, but finding a complete 12a turbo with a complete harness will be next to impossible...... soooooo that leaves you with one option......aftermarket efi like halltech or michrotec, etc. etc..

alright, so let me get this straight... you're sayin i should get a 12a turbo but use a standalone ecu? ok, sounds good, but how much does a haltech cost and how complicated is it to set up?



and also whats the cost of all this? i dont have alot of money just sittin around, im hopin to find a cheap way to make some more power for later down the road, probably next year some time.

haltech is around $1000, you need to wire it all up, and setup the fuel maps. it requires some experience with tuning, similar to a carburator.



heres some wild ass guess cost breakdowns:



jdm 12at engine $1200?

ecu $1000

efi fuel pump $150

oil cooler $150

new exhaust $300



est hp: 200rwhp@8-9psi (all thats safe, no intercooler)

thanks for the info, and good guess on the price of the turbo 12a (i just found one for exactly that price https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub... ) thats quite the pretty penny though... what would it take tranny-wise to hold up that power? sorry for all the questions, but i really appreciate all the info i get from you guys.



still looking for more info on a blow through turbo system, again, any information will be appreciated.

a halltech f10 would be the simplest way..
