Hi I recently got my '82 Rx7 power train back together (again) and where it idles around 900, its pretty iffy and sounds like its struggling to stay running... Sometimes when I put the clutch in to come to a stop it stalls, but only once in a while, usually after coming down from high rpms. It runs beautifully after it hits 1500 rpms and above, so when the choke's out it's fine too. The only thing i changed since I put the car back together is i cut two one inch slots in the exhaust right before the muffler because i couldnt get some of the exhaust bolts off and wanted to replace the exhaust system. I ran out of funds so had to leave it that way. Since it runs fine in higher rpms, I was wondering is a this back pressure problem from the exhaust being cut open?

I ran straight pipes on a 12a before and didn't have those issues, have you already tried adjusting the idle screw or the fuel metering screw?

Yeah i just looked that stuff up on rx7 club and i'm gonna try this weekend cause the carb probably needs adjustment since it used to be automatic...

Since there's so many different screws on the carb, can some one give me an idea of where the set screws for idle and the idle fuel mixture are located and what they look like? are they the little phillips or the really big flatheads? something in between? pictures would be very helpful!

the Nikki carb is Sterling. He has a very nice writeup on his site that walks

you through the process of fine tuning the idle.



If needed, there are also several troubleshooting articles, and if you are totally

desperate then you can join his forum and ask him questions directly.

they'll be flatheads and should be the only ones with springs under them lol

Thanks. turns out there were a couple vacuum hoses loose... I plugged them up with some spare bolts and the engine runs good as new
