hey guys im checking different boards on oil changes for this car i have. its an 83 GS. when you change the oil you dont have to put a hole in the oil fliter do you? that sounds odd. i would think you would at first drain the oil, change the filter & put back in new oil. is this correct? or do these rotary's have issues on oil changes? thanks

I changed my oil just like a normal car and have had no problems at all. Tray underneath, undo sump plug, drain for ages, then forget that oil filter is top mounted, ( :squint: )take it off to early, cover engine in oil, spend the next 20 minutes trying to clean oil off the car so that it doesn't drip all over the driveway paving, finish draining, put back sump plug, lightly oil new filter seal, put on new filter, refill engine with oil, 2L at a time to avoid overfilling. Takes about 4-5L. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

so you can leave the filter on top without poking a hole in top. man im questionign this other board im on.

poke a hole in the top of the oil filter??? Just do it like normal, but every damn time I change mine the thing is so damn tight I have to use vise grips to get it off. And I honest to god don't over tighten it. Maybe I am weak. :bigthumg:

Poking a hole in the top of the oil filter will allow the oil to leak out of the filter and down the pipes (and through the oil pan into the bucket is the idea) so that you don't make that huge mess when you take it off https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png Poke the hole only in the OLD filter you're gonna throw out obviously, a hole in the new one would be really stupid.

What I wasn't sure of is whether or not you had to fill the new filter with a bit of oil before putting it on... I don't think you have to though.

the only reason there is to poke a hole in the oil filter is to keep the motor clean. I'm sure you know what a hot drain of a filter is, and this is the same concept, and merely works as a slight breather to speed up the draining process.
