I have a 84 GSL-SE, my fuel gage works when the tank is full and standing still. When I drive the gage goes to empty and someitmes it goes to half then back to empty. But after that the gage is at empty. Please help! is it the gage or the fuel sender in the tank?

Hey Rotaryrascal. Could be a couple of things I've seen before. The float/guage assembly is in the tank. I've had a couple recently where the actual float splits and doesn't float anymore, causing radical guage movements. The second prob[this happens with lots of other cars as well] is the sender unit itself. As the float moves, it scribes an arc across a whole bunch of wires wound around the unit. As it moves to different areas on these windings the length[or resistance] changes and this reading is sent to your dash guage which reads resistance and hence then the needle moves the required amount.[sorry that's a bit technical!!]

Basically you'll need to remove that unit and you'll see the windings near the float arm. What usually happens with age is a couple of those wires break and understandably cause the unit to not work properly.

It possibly could be in the dash unit, but I'd look to the sender first. Good luck.
