Hey guys, I went to install a dual alternator pulley, but could not put on the nut with the washer in place. Can I go w/o the washer ? can anything bad happen ?

also, I down have an impact gun, so is it alright to tighten it as much as I can ??

help please,

TIA

You should use the washer because it's a lock washer. If you're not going to use an impact gun then stick a big screwdriver in one of the fan blades inside the alternator when you tighten the nut. That will work, but be careful not to break the outer housing.

hey thanks for the quick reply :D

I will swing by an alternator shop and let them at it.
I got freaked out on my way home. I redlined for like the 5th time and the alternator was making a weird noise (humming at idle and gets louder with the revs). I'm not sure what it is since it is dark out :(

so to clarify, if I don't use the washer: I just tighten the nut as much as possible with the impact gun and don't worry about it ?

Use the washer. It's there for a reason. ;) Just have the shop get it on for you.

hey thanks again.

I wasn't able to get it in at the time because I didn't have much room to play with and the 22mm sucked (it was way too deep). Not to mention the alternatoe was hotter than hell (hot potato, hot potato  )

Yeah, hot alternators are tough to handle. :o

I used a chain wrench on mine and it went right on.

I had the same problem with that washer, but once I got the pulley down on the shaft the washer went right on.

20 bucks later, it's better now.

what happened was that the nut was rubbing and grinding against the pulley/alternator. So they had to fill in with a substance and let it harden so the nut won't have any play. I got them to get it on with the washer.

damn, I know better next time

:bigok:
