I've just come back from the Gold Coast which was great, but it depends on what you're wanting to do. The Coast is great and the weather is usually perfect but there are alot of tourists. Melbournes my favourite place to visit and is very different, great shopping and really good food but the beaches aren't so great. Sydney's cool and I suppose you get the best of both the Coast and Melbourne but on a much larger scale.
If your visiting near the end of the year it'll be coming into peak season and the weather will be pretty good since it'll be getting into summer and all.
As far as shops are concerned I have never had a chance to see any while i've been there, they all seem to be to far out of the way and spread well apart.
If you check out Ausrotary you should be able to pick up a few dates on some of the major meets and shows that happen around that time.
